Informatica install on Dev/QA/Prod

We're installing the Informatica Powerconnect software onto our SAP instance. The way that Informatica do this is to install full program onto Dev environment (allowing developers to create code, deploy, execute). On QA and Production, Informatica install is to install only sufficient product to allow execute of generated code. How standard is this technique? Is anyone else doing it this way or are you installing all product and using security to control the environment?
