Hi experts,
I want to create an index for a table, Do we need to involve basis people in this? and if so, why?
Thanks for your response in advance.

yes u can create a Index for the z-table but i believe u need neccessry permission(i.e Authorization key) for the sap-table.
but u have to be carefull about the number of index created for the table. also make sure that the table has large number of records otherwise Index will create unneccesary overheads.

you can create Index on the table , but this depends on the company policy , Most of the time company <u><b>Involves:)</b></u> there DBA`s to see even your table. As a note , lot of INDEX on the table also make it inefficient . Its also important to create the index with right requirement . I mean adding the right fields into it and using them in a right way . From the basis stand point lot of indexes also some time drop the performance of the system .
Hope thisll give you some guide line.
Thanks

If you have access, you can create it.. I would take the DBA's opinion..

there is a trade off with creating indexes. Properly designed they will improve the performance of reports, for example but the overhead is the maintenance and the extra disk space.
You need to think about how the updating of your index which will occur every time a new record is added or deleted will affect other processes. It could be that your new program (which only runs once a month) will run super fast but the maintenance slows a frequently used transaction down.
Basis will be interested in likely performance changes and the disk usage too.

Z table or SAP table? If it's an SAP table, I'd try to find a programming solution.
Large table or small? Indexes take up space.
Is it updated online? Adding an index to a table that is updated online will slow it down to some degree.

Hi
When anyone adds an index to any table. It will slow down the update and insert process of that table.Because every time all primary keys and indexes have to be re-considered by the system.
So it is better to identify the impact onto the system.
if possible involve BASIS ppl.

Hi Thilothama,
1 ) For an index to create , You have the necessary user authorizations and the user attribute NOT EXCLUSIVE.
2) Indexes provide access to the table data using non-key columns plus If duplicate keys have already been inserted in the table, it is no longer possible to create the index. You must identify the incorrect keys and delete them.
3) Having Multiple index on the same table will also effect the performance.
You can create your own index also keeping in mind the above points.

Hi thilothama,
1. Do we need to involve basis people in this ?
Not required !
2. Involve the functional consultant
to know the nature of the table.
a) very heavy with lots of records kind of table
b) normal table with very less records
c) etc.
3. They key to deciding whether we should
create a secondary index is :
a) the field which should be indexed
--- is it also used in other z programs,
as a search criteria in where conditions ?
b) is this field going to be used
in other future z programs in where conditions ?
c) If the report is very important,
and performance is very slow,
then building a secondary index
is justified.
4. Furhter, i personally feel that,
there should be the signature
of functional consultant
to make him aware of the consequences and performance.

Thank you all for the replies. The table is AFVC. I need the index on object number. Is it suggestable?
2006 Mar 02 2:23 PM
Yes, if this index will be helping in future. As suggested in earlier replies, get in touch with your basis team before creating the index.

I would look for a programming solution. Isn't the object number made up of the routing number and the counter?

Hi Thilothama,
Whenever a table a created(standard table or z-table), Primary Index gets created on the key fields of the table. Other Indexes are called Secondary Indexes.
In many cases we don't have the key fields in a SELECT query and in order to improve the performance, we have to create a Secondary Index.
Well, in order to create a Secondary Index we don't need any authorization or permission from basis team.
However, it's always a good idea to discuss with Functional Consultant before creating a Secondary Index.
Also, check the coding standards specified for your project because some companies don't prefer to create Secondary Indexes as unwanted Secondary Indexes can slow down the performance.
Hope it helps.
