generic Application level error handling on SAP side

Hi All,

Could you please elaborate or point me some useful links that can capture generic Application level error handling on SAP side.

The scope basically being, how can the errors or exceptions handled during processing data at the SAP end.

I work with PI and there are scenarios where the client is interested in bypassing the communication via PI and do a direct call to the application system. In such cases, we would like to know what is the methodology used in SAP to do exception handling.

Appreciate any inputs.
