Hello,
I am new to the ABAP world, but have been a more or less active user in various functions over last 15 years. I used to be an active Java programmer.
My plan is to start working on my ABAP development skills as I am curious and like to embark on a new hobby. I have a fairly up-to-date computer in my basement which I will use to install any software that is required to get me going.
Now my question is... Where do I start? Can anyone point me in the right direction and tell me what software packages are necessary (e.g. SAP Netweaver, ABAP Trial, IDE, etc.) to begin with? What is the right sequence when my ultimate goal is a ABAP 7.5 certification?
I have done my own research, but since a lot of tutorials out there appear to be outdated I thought it makes sense to ask the experts.
Thank you / wieman01

Hello Thomas,
Thank you, that should be a good starting point. I'll check that out and post back when I have figured it out.

Hello Julie,
Apologies for getting back to you this late. Thank you for your answer, I will give this a shot in the next few days. I plan to get this working on a Ubuntu install (no VM). I saw your tutorial for Suse, however, I personally prefer Ubuntu/Debian, therefore I will have to do a little research.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Helge, Sorry, I'm also late with this one. How did you get on? If it worked, and you want to blog on this - including pitfalls etc - then I will publish this in the FAQs.
All the best,
Julie.

Hello Julie,
Not a problem. It took me a couple of days to sort things out on my end, but I eventually managed to install SAP Netweaver on Ubuntu and write my first "Hello World!" program. So far so good... I am struggling a bit with Eclipse and the latest ABAP plugin for Oxygen, but I'll revert to an earlier version of Eclipse to work around that problem.
I have taken extensive notes and plan on publishing a blog, in particular with regards to networking and getting SAP Netweaver to work in your local network, so you can have an instance of NPL running on one machine, but connect to it and develop on another one.
Thank you for your help so far. I'll reach out to you once I get around to finishing that blog.
