Hi,
The Posting period variant controls which posting periods, both normal and special, are open for each company code. It is possible to have a different posting period variant for each company code in the organization. The posting period is independent of the fiscal year variant.
Fiscal Year is a period of 12 months and SAP provides 4 special periods to posting adjustment Entries. Fiscal year determines posting periods. Posting periods are used to assign business transactions. Fiscal year may be year dependent or year independent.

Hi,
Pravallika,
Posting periods are used to specify when business transactions are posted.Generally, there are 12 posting periods and 4 special posting periods.
A financial Year(FY) normally consists of 12 months.so, every month is treated as 1 posting period. if ur finacial year is from JAN to DEC, if u want to posting an entry into General ledger/ CASH/Assets table, its posting period is 1, for DEC , it is 12.
For the last month, there are so many transactions are in the line to consolidate all the accounts of that FY.So, 4 special postongs are available to use in the last month.but, we can use at any time these 4 special periods.
if it useful, reward points.
Thank u,
