Delivery Update

Please can anyone help, I need to update a delivery document with a new picking qty some other header fields and to add a new partner. I tried BAPI_OUTB_DELIVERY_CHANGE but this doesn't give all the field i need to change and I've also tried WS_DELIVERY_UPDATE but this has no error handling (if someone has the delivery open, it just stops!).

any suggestions would be welcome.
