how to do this on an existing program. any advice is appreciated.

Look at how far back the report runs through the database history as it seems to take a while to run (over an hour most of the time)?

check the Tcode SUIM

for the number of times that Program(TCODE) ruun by a user etc.

debug and after each selection statement check the internal table retrieved and see how old the retrieved documents are e.g. if selecting FI docs are you using posting date, coult it be added to the selection screen etc
