BAPIs are Standardized programming interface enabling external applications to access business processes and data in the R/3 System.
BAPIs are defined in the Business Object Repository as methods of SAP business object types that carry out specific business functions.
BAPIs are implemented as RFC-enabled function modules and are created in the Function Builder of the ABAP Workbench.
Some Usages of BAPIs are
#1 Loading Data into SAP
Used as a tool to upload legacy data into SAP and also transactional data in SAP
#2 Connecting to SAP from External systems
Interface to connect SAP and external systems by means of APIs
For Eg...
You can use standard BAPIs to create Documents in SAP...Like Purchase order, Sales order etc. By using the Standard BAPI for creating the document, you will be assured that the intergrity of the document and other related documents will be maintained.
Le'me know if you need any more info.
