BAPI_MATERIAL_SAVEDATA error

Hi .. when we try to create material thru BAPi BAPI_MATERIAL_SAVEDATA.. we r getting below error..

"Material number XXXXXXXXXX is not supported in version"

is there any version related issue here ??

internally there is a FM called "MATNR_NUMBER_CREATE" which is causing error.. it is raising exception as "MATNR_ALREADY_EXISTS"
