Asynchronous and synchronous processing

Hello,

I am trying to find the meaning of Asynchronous and synchronous processing from BDC / Call transaction perspective. If you search on google then at some places BDC is said to be asynchrounous and call transaction as synch. I am trying to search the official sap doc link that gives the correct information.

Can somebody help me to understand the difference and the meaning of it? A link is also appriciated to sap doc.
