Consumable material with quantity updating

My company is investigating consumable materials and I'm trying to understand the UNBW - non valuated type where only quantity is updated. Once the consumable is received what are the scenario and process to deplete this stock? Is the stock visible in standard inventory reports and movements? Also the option exists to uncheck quantity updating at a valuation area level, would this then be equivalent to NLAG if unchecked for specific valuation area?
