SCN Mobile Tips & Tricks

Use your mobile like a pro in your community.

All Platforms

Go to the Home Page

Tap your community's header logo to jump to the Home page.

Tap to View Items and Execute Actions

Tapping a content item opens it. For non-content items such as a phone numbers, email address, or URL, a tap will launch the action, i.e., start a phone call, email, or open a Web page.

Scroll and Zoom Large Images and Content Items

All images automatically resize to fit properly into your mobile window. Tap any image to open it in a new window where you can use your browser or mobile's native resizing features, such as scrolling and zooming.

If you are viewing an item with content that does not fit within the mobile device window, for example, a table, tap the open in new window icon (to the left of the Search icon). From a new window, you can now scroll and zoom to see the item better. To go back to your community, close the window using your browser controls.

Create a Status Update

Tap the Create (pencil) icon in the upper right corner, next to the Search icon, then Status Update (on a phone, you may need to tap the triangle to select Status Update).  Tap the box to see your cursor and begin typing. To @mention another user, tap the @ button, tap the Search box, and then begin typing the name of the person; select their name when the application suggests users to you.  When you're finished typing, tap Update or Post. (You may have to tap OK before Update, depending on your device.)

Create a Discussion

Tap the Create (pencil) icon in the upper right corner, next to the Search icon. To @mention another user, tap the @ button, start typing the name of the person, and then select their name when the application suggests users to you. When you're finished typing, tap Update or Post. (You may have to tap OK before Update, depending on your device.)

@mention Someone

Tap the @ button and then the text box to begin typing the person's name, followed by Search. The mobile app remembers your recent @mentions to make this easier for future @mentioning.

Search for Content

Tap the Search icon in the upper right corner, next to the Create icon. Tap in the search box, type in your search keyword(s), and then tap Search. The app returns three pages of results: Users, Content, and Places. Tap one of these to scroll through the search results.

Android

Add Your Community's Bookmark Image to Your Phone's Home Screen

From the Home screen where you want to add the bookmark, press and hold in an empty space to bring up the Add to Home Screen menu. Select Shortcuts > Bookmark > (your community bookmark). Note that your community administrator needs to have designated an icon for this capability (called a Bookmark Image).

Blackberry

Add Your Community's Bookmark Image to Your Phone's Home Screen

Browse to the community and log in (optional), press the Menu button on the device, and then select Add to Home Screen. Note that your community administrator needs to have designated an icon for this capability (called a Bookmark Image).

Apple

Go to the Home Page

Tap the Home icon (tablet only) or your community's logo in the header to jump to the Home page.

Jump to Top of Page (iPhone only)

Tap the current time in the top navigation bar to jump to the top of the page.

Scroll through Your Streams

You can scroll up and down through any of your streams using up and down swiping motions.

Use the Reader View to Send, Like, Follow, or Comment On Content in the Communications Stream

Tap once on an item in your Communications stream and then tap either of the triangles in the top navigation bar to scroll back and forth between the content items in the stream. From this view, you can also like, follow, or comment on the item, or send the item to another user.

Add Your Community's Bookmark Image to Your Home Screen

Log into your community using Safari, and then tap either Safari's bookmark or add-to icon (depending on device version) and select Add to Home Screen. This places your community's icon on the last page of your Home screen. Note that your community administrator needs to have designated an icon for this capability (called a Bookmark Image).

The app itself is based on HTML 5 and is hosted by Jive Software.  Unfortunately, I do not have more details.  I hope this helps.

Jive has been focusing on HTML5 as well as iOS apps.  If the devices you mentioned support HTML 5, then it is certainly possible that your devices will be supported in the future.

I'd really like to see a Windows 8/RT version. I think it'd be real slick on that new Surface tablet

Hi Ulrich,

Please post your bug reports in the SCN Bug Reporting space.  As far as improvements go, please feel free to submit your ideas into Idea Place, but I want to make sure that you are aware of some constraints.  The SCN Mobile application is a standard product from Jive Software, and as such, we (the SCN Team) can make product improvement suggestions, but Jive has their own roadmap and delivery timeline.  We will do our best to keep you up to date as updates become available.

Regards,

Scott

Installed and works well! The only thing is that the icon (Android) is still called Jive. Is there a way to have the SCN logo instead?

Hi Enno,

Are you are talking about the home screen icon (HTML5 browser app) or the native Android app?  If it is the home screen icon from the browser app, it is strange that this would be the case as it works fine for iPhone.  For the native Android app and iPhone app, yes, since Jive is the author of the app, their logo is the icon of the app.  We will approach Jive to see what can be done.

Scott

Really great. Question: Is all SCN content suitable for viewing on mobile or does it have to be made suitable for scrolling etc?

Thanks,

Joan

This post just reminded me that the soon to be old SCN actually did support mobile, but when I tried it out several years ago I found it somewhat useless, so just stuck with the browser.  Positive progress after the upcoming launch for those of you who benefit from such an interface.  Unless it is an app on my iPhone that is way better than the browser, I've found that so many apps like banking and credit card sites are barely worth installing, except for the touch login

It will go away as soon as the community migrates.

See SCN Open Beta if you haven't seen the announcements yet.
