ECC system with underlying database as HDB without system actually migrated to S4 HANA

I am new to S4 HANA.

I want to know , whether we can have ECC system running on top of HDB as underlying database without system actually migrating to S4 HANA.

If the database is being upgraded, you can't use any software which uses this database.
