Last week, SAP + Esri co-hosted the third innovation hackathon in Den Bosch, Netherlands. In the newly opened SAP Experience Center, customers and partners came together to experience first-hand the power of our co-innovation efforts. By running Esri ArcGIS on SAP HANA, customers see immediate benefits including increased performance, seamless integration of business data with spatial data and lower total cost of ownership. With the recent Esri support of SAP Cloud Platform SAP HANA service, now customers can run SAP HANA as the underlying database for the ArcGIS system of record either on-premise, in the cloud, or in a hybrid environment.

Customer and partners took up the challenge of creating cloud solutions that address business and sustainability challenges according the UN sustainable development goals all under 48 hours. Using Esri ArcGIS and SAP HANA service as the core solutions, participants were able to experience our deeply integrated platforms while also being able to add other technologies from SAP and Esri such as SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA Spatial Services, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise and Esri Insights for ArcGIS. Better yet, participants were given the flexibility to bring their data sets allowing for an even more valuable experience.

The Solutions

Team: Last Minute

Team Last Minute consisted of the German Army and Conterra and together they addressed the UN goal of good health and well-being. The team created a solution that has the ability to save lives by addressing the question of whether to send an ambulance or a helicopter to an accident based on location, weather and terrain. The cloud-based app leverages SAP HANA, weather data from SAP HANA Spatial Services, Esri ArcGIS Pro as the client app, FME for manipulating and cleansing of data together with open data for the digital elevation of Germany.

“To use the speed of SAP HANA database in spatial functions and using ArcGIS Pro as a client app.” Conterra

Team: Water World

This team addressed both the goals of clean water and sanitation as well as climate action. Using sample data from a utility customer, the Water World team worked on a solution that triggers a warning based on sensor data and then locates and assigns the closest maintenance crew with the right certifications, assigns a work order to this crew and sets up close monitoring. By acting quickly before possible incidents, this solution avoids water loss. Applications used include SAP HANA, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, Operations dashboards, Insights for ArcGIS, FME and SAP HANA Graph Data Model.

“Really to cool to see that once you have your data in place in SAP HANA, you prepare your data, you can easily leverage that data across the Esri platform. Starting in ArcGIS pro but in running through all of the apps available in Enterprise. Worked like a charm!” Tensing

Team: Colruyt or “The Breakers”

Team Colruyt’s objective in attending the hackathon was to work with their own data set and uncover greater insight through integrating their business data with spatial data superpowered by SAP HANA. Throughout the course of the hackathon, Colruyt earned a new name of “The Breakers” by pushing the hackathon instance to the limits all the while proving that SAP HANA can handle large data sets. The end result was a solution that provides business insight and an overall experience that broke down the silos between the GIS departments and IT.

We broke down the wall between the GIS and HANA reporting to get to know how it works with GIS. . .” Colruyt

Better Together: SAP + Esri

This hackathon showcased the power of SAP and Esri solutions working together and what can happen when we bring GIS together with IT. By providing time to experience and test our solutions, our participants were able to drive existing businesses, enable new business models and ultimately improve human lives. SAP + Esri are truly better together!
