Dynamic Retention Sampling - SAP QM

We have a requirement in which the business needs to collect retention samples during the processing of a process order for a finished product. However, the number of samples to be taken is variable and depends on the number of tanks of semi-finished liquid pumped and the quantity of liquid from each tank used in production. An example scenario is provided below. We are looking for a solution to address these dynamic scenarios within SAP while ensuring that retention samples are appropriately labelled.

Our users have flowmeters to monitor the tank's liquid levels, so they are aware of when to take these samples.

Eg :

  • if we use 1 full tank of semi-finished product to produce the Finished Product , then we need to take 3 samples
  • 1st sample as soon as we start pumping put the liquid
  • 2nd sample when it reaches the middle on the tank
  • 3rd sample when it reaches end of the tank

  • if we use 1.5 tanks of semi-finished product to produce the Finished Product , then we need to take 5 samples
  • 1st sample as soon as we start pumping put the liquid from tank 1
  • 2nd sample when it reaches the middle of the tank 1
  • 3rd sample when it reaches end of tank 1
  • 4th sample as soon as we start pumping put the liquid from tank 2
  • 5nd sample when it reaches the middle of the tank 2

Hi Karthik,

Did you had a look at inspection points?

You can configure a inspection point type and add this into the inspection plan/routing.

Then multiple inspections can be created which can be 'stamped' with the date/time or other information according what you have configured.

Thanks Alkemade,

So rather than the system creating a set number of retention samples automatically, the users would create an inspection point manually as required that which would then generate an retention sample ?

HI Karthik,

Indeed that is what I thought could be an option for you.
