In case you have been with this community for more than 5 years, chances are good that you are ware of a group of SAP community members, called the Enterprise Geeks. craig.cmehil, daniel.mcweeney, ed.herrmann, rich.heilman and thomas.jung have been very active in the community, participated at SAP DemoJam, started SAP related open source projects, published books, and released a regular podcast, which I have been an avid listener of.

This is a tribute to this group of passionate SAP geeks, which have been a inspiration for many here in SCN, and a checkbox for a long standing item in my personal ToDo list.

Attribution

The current platform running SCN has the ability to define a couple of default avatars that users can pick from, instead of uploading their own, personal one. Before the launch in 2012, I was wondering what suitable avatars would fit there, something SCN specific that might not everybody notice at first sight. By coincidence I had the original artwork of the EgHead on my machine, which I modified to fit better into the current SCN design. Since then the EgHead has been a part of SCN, and used by many as their avatar image.

Prior to sneaking it into the avatar defaults (I never told any of the business owners  ) I asked the Enterprise Geeks for permissions, which they gladly accepted. But only if I would attribute the avatar to the original creators, which I never did until today.

A big thanks from my side to the Enterprise Geeks for letting me use their fabulous EgHead icon as SCN avatar, for all their contributions to SCN over the years, and to the SAP ecosystem in general. Craig, Thomas and Rich are still very active, and the latter two will do a bunch  of sessions at SAP TechEd in Las Vegas next week. They are usually booked out early, so in case this is your beat, hurry up and still try to get a seating.

I’ve actually never use the EgHead avatar before. But in the spirit of this blog post, I’ve changed my avatar to the EgHead for the time being. Feel free to do the same and say thanks to the Enterprise Geeks.

SAP Community Profile

Why now, you may ask? We are soon going to move to a new platform, which we will call then SAP community. It is completely built from the ground up, and will provide a technical foundation for this community to grow in the years to come. There have been many blog posts written about this change, and you find a overview of them in Communications Overview for #1DXCOMMDEST.

The new SAP community has been live in beta since SAPPHIRE NOW in May, and we have invited our community to test it and provide feedback in order to focus our efforts on what our community members think is most important.

One of its key elements is a beautiful, brand new profile. It is designed to provide an overview of your reputations and contributions, and connect to any community member by following their activities. But this new profile is not just for SAP community alone anymore. It is also accessible from SAP.com directly and by that available to everybody registering and logging in there, and will bring in new features and additional information in the future, to serve even more people in the SAP ecosystem.

Because of this, there won’t be an EgHead avatar in the new profile anymore. It only features a single profile picture, which is also used as avatar in blog and Q&A.

SAP Community @ TechEd

A big part of the community will come together next week in Las Vegas, and we have a couple of sessions planned to present the new SAP community. oddss published an overview of our planned activities in the blog post Community Central: The Place to Be on the SAP TechEd Show Floor in Las Vegas!. I will do a networking session, where I will provide an high level overview of new SAP community platform architecture and would be glad to see you there.

BIG Enterprise Geeks fan from the OG days!!! Loved podcast and the blogs/content they have posted through the years has been hugely valuable to so many! Best part is the dinners at TechEd...which grew larger and larger each year till "other" plans had to be made! haha

Somewhere on the interwebs there are pictures of the FBL's I had made to commemorate the EgHead, which may pass out of memory and be rediscovered by some future civilization, and they will say 'These beings were strange'.
