tools for Business Process Modelling

Hi !!

I am working as an functional Consultant and new to Business Process Modelling,

After Business Process Mapping & understanding the clients requirements, we design a workflow document.

what are Best tools for modelling the workflow of the client explicitly so that Technical team can utilize it for Development, develop the same in Min. Possible time?

I addition to ARIS you might consider using Telelogic's System Architect. it's an expensive product but worth the money, especially if you're coming from the business side and want to connect your business processes to business goals/objectives and to services and applications on the other side.

I would tend to slightly disagree with that comment If the business already had or was about to start an SAP project . You describe a scenario that talks to the business process requirements and alignment with potential service offerings and business goals / objectives. These scenarios reflect business requirements that should be captured and documented either within Solution manager or an enterprise services repository.

If this is likely to be within an SAP Netweaver environment then you need a tool that can synchronise with solution manager and generate modelling code, this then suggests something like ARIS for SAP Netweaver or possibly Intelicorp Live Model . Please see the comments from Anne above.

And if the SAP project is all about using Netweaver as the "ESB" of the enterprise. In that case we want holistic view of the enterprise to show all the business values of that project to the CxO level. whether the current implementations are SAP one, SAP ecosystem or non ASP. In this case we need to use any Enterprise architecture methodology and tools and System architect, as well as ARIS are one of the EA supporting tools.

But (just for the debating) if you want to make any SAP project, IMO you can use any tool as long as this tool generete BPEL. Becuse, correct me if I wrong (I'm novice to SAP), Netweaver is able or will be able to run BPEL.

Spot on Natan,

SAP NetWeaver has at it's very core a BPEL engine (originally developed for SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure). Not only did SAP develop the engine but was (and is) actively involved in specifying the BPEL standard.

In fact, one of two of the newer patterns came at SAP's suggestion because of their practical importance in industrial processes.

You did not specify what your SAP landscape is however I would say that your choices are;

ARIS for SAP Netweaver if the requirements are ERP based

Visual Composer if it includes Portal and BI or you want to do a quick prototype

Taken into account that you are more process-oriented than application-oriented, but with a need to communicate both process- and application-orientd models, a good choice would be to go for a tool that "talks" both languages. This typically means BPM for process modelling and UML for application modeling.

As stated by Paul earlier, Aris is a good option for you. Especially as this tool has a direct connection to Netweaver (via XI), and a big number for metamodels for you to use. Using Aris you can also enhance your process models into executable workflow models using the BPEL (Business Process Execution Language)modeling language. Check out SAP partner IDS Scheer for more details.

However, if you are looking for a quick win - getting some hands-on experience with modeling, there are several good modeling tools available for free test download on the market. These does off course not have the sophisticated UI or interoperability features as Aris, but are OK for learning purposes. Some of the better free tools include: MagicDraw (www.magicdraw.com) and Intalio(www.intalio.com).

well if you're looking at a way to document process models for development to implement, then maybe you should ask development how do they expect specifications to be documented. Maybe for SAP Business One, a visio document based on a template provided by development should be enough. SAP Business One being a C++/VB development environment, it's not very likely any SAP Business Process Modeling tools will be appropriate. Because a process model needs to to implemented in a particular technical environment, the best way to document a business process to ease the development effort is to document the business process in a business language that contains the necessary technical elements or building blocks that are required by the development environment to build a business process (roles, process flow, ui, business logic, data).

Or maybe if development wants to develop new modules using something different than C++/VB like NW04s, then VP, GP, or BPM would make sense. Andre

In many cases just data flow models in Visio will do if you are talking about requirements and conveying the data flow to the developers. In many a case there will be a document , Logical Data model and then if need be , a Visio Drawing. But if you are into designing processes , confirming processes across the company etc , then you could look at BPM.
