Roles and Profiles:
Role Consist of Profiles, there is no difference between role and profile.
Profiles get generated when you create roles.
Note: In earlier versions of SAP(46b,46c) we use to create role manually using Tcode su02.
From 46c onwards SAP has introduced a tool called Profile Generator Tool(pfcg). so we are no more using Tcode su02.

hi,
To answer your questions at a high level, when you create a role in the
system through PFCG it generates a profile behind the scenes. The role,
is then assigned to users and can be limited for validity dates, can have
urls and miniapps assigned etc in addition to the authorisation objects
and values which are assigned through the profile it generates. The list
of t-codes you enter into the menu of a role is only the beginning. From
there you need to populate the values in the authorisation objects which
are pulled through into the role based on the transaction codes you have
entered.
