Error performing workflow background task Return message from work item within a closed component

I have an FI approval workflow that has been running for 10+ years but its recently started having a problem. After the FI document is approved, a background task posts the document. I'm running the background job SWWERRE to retry the posting if there are any temporary errors and this has always seem to work.

One particular user has approved 2 docs in the past couple of weeks that have gotten a temporary error which caused the workflow to stop and appear as tho it completed normally.

What do you mean by "appear as though completed normally"?

Do you have multiple branches? A change in how events are handled could cause this. Example branch A posts, branch B waits for change and tries to complete the fork.
