S4 HANA Cloud Private Edition vs On-Prem (Any Prem)

What are the differences between S4 Hana Cloud Private Edition (aka PCE) and On-Prem (Any Prem) , especially around customization options?

Reading through blog posts, I see a heavy emphasis on fit-to-standard. I.e Side by side extensions, user extensions are preferred in Private Edition. Although not preferred, Code mods and classic extensions are also allowed in Private edition.

Can someone explain what customizations are not allowed in Private Edition as compared to the On-Prem S4? An OSS note or publicly available document would be useful.

Thanks in advance!

I always thought the Cloud Private Edition was essentially "S/4HANA On-Prem but in the Cloud".

Would be good to know if there is a list of things that you cannot do with the Private Edition that is available for On-Prem versions though!

When launched, SAP S/4HANA Cloud extended edition was also assumed to be similar to the On-Prem version. However, there were restrictions documented in note https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/2920697 .

Just want to make sure before making recommendations to the client regarding PCE.

Hi Ajithi,

To understand the extend of the scope of S/4HANA, private cloud edition, I recommend you to look at the following documentation

If your customer is looking to implement S/4HANA, private cloud edition following a greenfield approach, I recommend you to look at the following note: https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/3035880

Hope this helps,

Hi Marco,

Thank you for these inputs. Is there a note for brownfield / system conversion?

Thank you,
Ajith
