Instance number in the sap servers?

Hello All,

Could you please help me by explaining the meaning of instance number in the sap landscape? does the number assigned to different servers vary from project to project?

If yes, is there any standard or general way to recognize the system like whether it is dev/quality/prod by looking into the instance number?

An SAP instance defines a group of resources such as memory and work processes, usually serving a single application server or a database server in a client/server environment. Application servers share the same memory areas and are controlled by the same distribution process. They are

Some FM can help to identify a system rome, e.g. FM TR_SYS_PARAMS (field SYSTEM_CLIENT_ROLE)

Else look at STMS for some naming rule applied on your landscape, may vary, e.g. FM TMS_CI_GET_SYSTEMLIST (itab TT_SYSLIST)
