It was a sunny afternoon, and I sat across from the technical manager, nerves tingling. The job interview had been intense—questions about my experience, technical prowess, and problem-solving abilities. But sometimes, it’s the unexpected moments that leave a lasting mark. As the manager described their vision for a new application—Microsoft Visual BASIC and Access—I listened intently. The room buzzed with excitement. Finally, there was a pause, and my instincts kicked in. “Ahhh… Access,” I said, almost involuntarily. The manager’s eyes widened. “You know Access?” he asked, enthusiasm bubbling. And just like that, the tide turned. Suddenly, I was the candidate they sought—the one who understood Access intricacies. The interview shifted from grilling to camaraderie. In the end, it wasn’t a complex algorithm or a dazzling code snippet that sealed the deal. It was a shared moment, a connection forged over a database tool. In my last interviews, which consisted of mainly three rounds - Technical, Managerial, and HR - I experienced a moment that truly showcased the power of a clever response. After successfully demonstrating my technical competence in the 1st round, I moved on to the managerial interview with the practice lead. The discussion was focused on my understanding of business processes, technical expertise, and experience with previous organizations to which I answered authentically and confidently with some cross-questions, establishing my credibility and expertise. I never hesitated to use the whiteboard to explain my understanding of any topic. (off-course taking permission to use it and wiping board at the end) As the 45 mins interview drew close, the practice lead asked the classic question: Do you have any questions for me? (This moment can significantly impact the interview outcome, and I seized the opportunity to make a lasting impression.) I asked some smart questions about the overall practice strength, org-structure, project pipeline, team dynamics, and my potential role and responsibilities. By visualising myself in the position already and expressing genuine curiosity, I showed my sincere interest in the organisation, intending to understand how the team is structured, the types of projects handled, and how well I would fit into the team. I also asked if I needed to prepare for any specific skills before joining. Lastly, I asked him about his overall professional journey, fostering a positive and engaging conversation and we closed the interview on a very positive note followed by an offer. Bottom line: If we can genuinely interview the interviewer, it showcases intent, confidence, knowledge, and authenticity which leaves a strong impression and reinforces genuine interest in joining the team and org. It was not easy to be Early Talent at SAP, 25 years ago, let alone any company with no experience and not from IITS/ BITS. It was the first attempt from SAP to hire from Bangalore University campus and conducted an interview at an engineering college. When they knew few MCA post graduates also were part of the test, they made sure to write it on the form, that may not consider those candidates. The placement officer wanted to give oppurtunity to engineering graduates than MCA coming from another college.  Though I was in this unfortunate category, I gave my best shot in the test and fortunately got selected for the interview. One of the questions in the interview was focusing on this aspect, why did I attempt the test against all odds ? I replied that I am optimist in life,  do my best and hope for the rest. In my recent interview with SAP, I was posed with a question that tested my ability to balance family life and professional responsibilities. The interviewer remarked, "Since you have been married and blessed with a child, you must be busy with family and won't be able to focus on work." Here’s how I responded, drawing valuable lessons from my personal life that translate seamlessly into my professional environment: 1. Patience: I shared that my family life taught me the crucial importance of patience. Just as maintaining patience is vital in nurturing relationships with my wife and child, it is equally critical in a professional setting. Patience allows me to navigate challenging situations and sustain positive relationships with my colleagues. 2. Becoming a Great Listener: Being a good listener is essential in understanding my wife and child better. This skill has immensely benefited my professional interactions as well, enabling me to comprehend my team's perspectives and needs more effectively. 3. Managing Relationships: Managing a family requires balancing various dynamics, which has honed my ability to manage difficult and dominant teams at work. It has taught me how to navigate different personalities and foster a collaborative environment. 4. Empathy: Understanding and empathizing with my family's feelings has been crucial at home. I worked in the SAP ecosystem for almost 15 years. My first job was as a Junior SAP Basis, and I was working towards becoming a Project Manager or Coordinator. In 2018, I had the opportunity to migrate to Canada. With my 15 years of experience working for large enterprises like British American Tobacco and Shell, I thought I would be an ideal candidate to secure a job with major SAP customers in North America. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I never had the opportunity to return to work in the SAP ecosystem. After six years, I am currently working as a ServiceNow Administrator. However, I still have an interest in doing something related to the SAP ecosystem, whether it be as a Project Coordinator, Test Coordinator, Release Coordinator, or any role as part of a Support or Project team. Highlighting Co-Leadership: The Leadership Paths of Irene and Daniela We warmly welcome you to the newest edition of our enlightening blog series on Co-Leadership. Today, we are eager to share the story of our fourth Co-Leadership duo, Daniela Wollinger and Irene Baldassari. Over the past year, in their roles as Head of Support Center Co-Lead Middle Europe, they have exemplified the efficacy of shared leadership. Based in Vienna (Austria), their journey offers invaluable insights into the Co-Leadership model. Dive into their journey and garner insights from their unique Co-Leadership lessons they've acquired on their path.   Why Co-Leadership? From Daniela's perspective, she was pleased to share responsibilities with Irene, considering her Co-Lead role isn't a full-time commitment. This strategic move ensured they could collectively fulfill all the needs of their 600 members of the Support Center Middle Europe. In Irene's perspective, she was motivated by a variety of factors. Among these were the combination of additional assignments, an effective collaboration with another Co-Lead, and the opportunity to incorporate more Lines of Business (LoBs) within her operation. Daniela and Irene present another variation of the Co-Leadership model in action. Despite being full-time employed, both serve as Co-Leads of the Support Center Middle Europe on a part-time basis. Beyond their shared leadership roles, they each have distinct responsibilities within SAP. While Daniela holds the position of Proactive Support Lead for SAP SuccessFactors HCM in the Technical Support (Customer Support) department, Irene fulfills the role of Knowledge Lead for FIN/GRC (Public Cloud ERP) in the same department.   How do you delegate work & responsibilities? Daniela explained that their approach to the task distribution is determined by mutual agreement. Their weekly calls and daily check-ins serve as platforms for discussing upcoming tasks, deciding who will take responsibility for each, or determining if they will collaboratively manage them. From Irene's perspective on delegating work and responsibilities, their successful Co-Leadership involves short-term alignment, establishing trust, embracing shared values, and maintaining regular, timely synchronization.   How did you navigate the process of determining and dividing your responsibilities as Co-Leaders? Daniela shared that her longstanding professional relationship with Irene, spanning over 23 years across multiple roles, has provided them the opportunity to become well-versed with each other's work styles, methods, and individual strengths and weaknesses. This familiarity eliminates any challenges in their shared leadership, allowing them to represent a single voice even when an assignment is taken on by only one of them. They hold brief informal check-ins to share feedback or discuss topics, and whenever feasible, they are together on calls. From Irene's viewpoint, the process of delegating responsibilities in their Co-Leadership role hinges on transparent communication, joint discussion and agreement on the general direction or vision, fostering trust, and a shared set of values.   The Impact of Co-Leadership In Daniela's viewpoint, even though they function as Co-Leads and speaking in a unified voice, they have different ideas, perspectives, and experiences. They coach each other through tough situations, offering a supportive ear for each other's challenges. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find someone at the same level to discuss particularly confidential topics. But, by having a Co-Lead, you gain someone with comparable knowledge and insight to engage in deeper conversation. “In my opinion this is a huge advantage to bring in diversity and inclusion.“ (Daniela Wollinger) Irene highlighted several beneficial changes stemming from their Co-Leadership journey, such as the ability to combine more talents. Additionally, having a substitute when one of them is unavailable offers an operational advantage, and finally, the growth and access to a larger professional network also provides significant benefits.   How did you overcome challenges within your Co-Leadership? “I love working with Irene. Although we know each other for more than 2 decades it was a new experience to work in this role together. Irene is a great peer and Co-Lead. I learn nearly every day something new out of this Co-Leadership role.” Daniela provided us some insights into how they navigated through challenges in their Co-Leadership role. She explained that, whenever they couldn't reach consensus on a particular topic or issue, they established a rotating decision-maker system between both. Above all, communication is a key element of their Co-Leadership, as it does in many other roles as well. Their combined experience, both being SAP internal Coaches and having been People Managers for over 20 years, consistently guided them towards reaching agreements. Finally, Irene added that open conversation is the most effective strategy for tackling challenges.
