upgrading SAP BW on non-HANA database but S/4 as source

Hi All,

Upgrading from SAP BW 7.0 on oracle to SAP BW 7.5 on oracle (ECC6 as a source). Larger plan not decided yet but may stick with BW 7.5 but use S/4 HANA as a source in future.

1. Is it possible to upgrade to BW 7.5 on sql with ECC6 as a main source of datasources? This question also related to the fact for

   - a purely technical upgrade , we don't convert to SAP BW 7.5 infoproviders like composite providers , ADSOs etc. We upgrade the system but leave the objects as is but in sap BW 7.5 (old objects supported in 7.5?). But if we do this , would we be able to interface with S/4 HANA as a datasource later? Will we be ready for a BW bridge for Datasphere?

2. OR is it better that we do a functional upgrade, convert 7.0 objects to 7.5 objects (ADSOs , composite providers, open hub etc.)

Regards,

Cleo

Hi Cleo

From the description the scenario is not clear to me.

Is my understanding correct, that you have a SAP BW 7.0 standalone BW system which is using an ECC6 SAPI source system, from which you are loading data?

Or you have an ECC6 system where you are using the embedded BW?

Thanks,

Roland

1. It is possible to tech upgrade to SAP BW 7.5 on SQL while keeping your existing data sources from ECC6 intact. BW 7.5 supports legacy objects from BW 7.0, meaning you can maintain your current InfoProviders like InfoCubes, Multiproviders without converting them immediately.

2. You can interface with S/4HANA as a data source later on, but keep in mind that newer features and optimizations for S/4HANA may not be fully utilized if you use older InfoProviders.

3. The BW Bridge will work with both legacy and new objects, but using new objects like ADSOs and composite providers can provide good performance and flexible data modeling, which is beneficial when integrating with Datasphere.

Thanks

if your source-system is at least one of these releases ...
https://help.sap.com/docs/SAP_BW_BRIDGE/107a6e8a38b74ede94c833ca3b7b6f51/327833022dcf42159a5bec55266...
... then you can use BW bridge or load data via the ODP extractors
