Hi guys,

I have a CI/DB sap server with Windows 2003 and SQL Server 2003.

The machine has 8 cpu and 8 gb ram !

Can you tell me what to take in consideration for the memory management parameters on this machine please ?

PHYS_MEMSIZE = 5,6 GB ?

What for the other parameters ?

Regards,

Marc.

Hello,

When setting this parameter PHYS_MEMSIZE all the other parameters like em/initial_size_MB, abap/heaplimit have to be deleted with RZ10 ?

normaly yes.

But sometimes you wan't to overwrite the Zero Admin defaults.

In this case you leave the parameter in the instance profile.

2.7GB is the maximum addressable memory size in 32b-it when using /3gb in boot.ini.

under 32bit you will not be able to address more than approx. 2.7GB - even when the appropriate /3GB option is set in BOOT.INI:

a) under 32bit no more than 4 GB is addressable

b) windows will reserve at least 2 GB for "itself" (exclusive use for system processes)

c) which will leave a maximum of 2 GB per application process

d) which can be enlarged using BOOT.INI option /3GB to 3 GB

e) of the 3 GB only about 2.7 GB can be used due to overhead issues

sorry Eric, but the exact value is:

it is 3GB if the value /userva is not set, it is the value of /userva if set.

read SAP note 88416.

if your OS is 32-bit, use:

PHYS_MEMSIZE=2700

if 64-bit:

PHYS_MEMSIZE=5600

from SAP note 88416, there is a list of about 10 parameters, make sure you delete ALL OF THEM in your SAP profiles if using PHYS_MEMSIZE.

PHYS_MEMSIZE means amount of physical memory to be comsumed by this one SAP instance (which uses this instance profile).

The algorithm calculating dependend parameters takes the limits of 32 Bit application servers into account.

Therefore: if you can (want to) spent 5.7 GB to the instance choose

PHYS_MEMSIZE = 5700

for the a 32 Bit instance too.

By the way: the only parameter which is virtual address space independend on a 32 bit system is em/initial_size_MB. It defaults to PHYS_MEMSIZE. If the allocated space is exhausted it will try to extend up to em/max_size_MB.
