Will SQLA 2.0 stop showing retags as edits?

1,530

I've no idea how tags are going to work on SQLA 2.0 but I assume we are going to have them, if someone edits the tags on an old question (which i've just done), on here the question pops to the top of the main list like someone has either added an answer or changed the question, I don't think it needs to do that just for adding a tag, or am I wrong and does everyone else think it should 🙂 ?

Currently no. Editing the tags is considered a change to the question just like editing it would be, so the question jumps back to the top of the list. A suggestion to change this for edits that just retag is already on my list of things to investigate, but if we decide to do it, it likely won't be before we go live.

I'm happy enough that it's on the list, it's not one of the features that needs to be there when it goes live, but it is nice to know that changes like that might be made 🙂

If this feature is added in the future, I would suggest to choose a more general facitily, e.g. an option to claim "this is a non-significant edit" or the like. (Some wikis support this AFAIK.) - This option could be preset for simple re-tags and could also be chosen if one just fixes a typo or something just as "irrelevant" w.r.t. "changed contents". Cf. http://sqlanywhere-forum.sap.com/questions/1075#1111.

I don't think it even needs to be as complicated as that, taking SQLA as an example 'retag' should just edit the tags and not promote it, and it should be the 'edit' option that asks you if you want to promote it or not, afterall you can edit the tags in the 'edit' option too if you really want it promoted. At least that's the way I'd like to see it work.

@Daz: I guess our suggestions are quite similar: I would expect such a "Promote my edit" option (or contrary named "This is a minor edit") on the edit page, too. And that would be a welcome feature, methinks. - The only particular logic I suggested would be if (only in case the software can detect this easily) when just a re-tag is done, then the according option would be pre-set to "Promote my edit" = false (aka "This is a minor edit" = true).

@Volker I think maybe your idea would match the needs of many, and would outweigh my idea which would only match the needs of the few 🙂

Seems appropriate right now 🙂

Yes, this question does seem appropriate since I have started going over the questions and retagging them to conform to the proposed standard.... but Graeme's answer still stands. Hopefully the pain caused by the massive retagging effort will be short lived and when done this will no longer be much of an issue.

Mark, are there plans to introduce some kind of "this is a non-significant edit" option that will prevent the "freshening" of the question in the views?

That is a good suggestion - I will add this to the TODO list of items to be researched.

It's not a new suggestion - I'm used to this from Wiki systems - see one of my comments on Graeme's answer.

Ah yes, I see. So Graeme has likely already researched the issue.
