WebAS 620 / CRM 4.0 system not starting up after patch

Former Member

I have recently built a CRM 4.0 system on WebAS 620 (APAB stack only) and it fails to start up after patching to:

SAP_BASIS - 0056

SAP_ABA - 0056

BBPCRM - 0009

PI_BASIS - 0010

Kernel - 640_87 (Aug 21 2005 23:40:31)

The only other change made to the system was an attempt to add the "login/system_client", which was removed from the Default profile when the system didn't start up.

This system is running on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and the Central And Database instances are running on a single 2 node cluster. I have moved all resources to one node to rule out a networking issue.

When I start the SAP service from Cluster Administrator, it runs for about 3 seconds then fails. I have increased the trace level to 3 (rdisp/TRACE = 3) but still cannot figure out the root cause of the problem. Below are the trace files:

Hi all,

the problem you are describing here is mentioned in note 824281. This note also provides a solution.

Best regards

After rebuilding this system, I have figured out that the problem is caused by the parameter 'login/system_client'. As soon as I add this parameter to the Default profile after a client copy, the instance refuses to start up. I've learnt from my mistakes and created a copy of all the original profiles.

Anyone had a problem when adding this parameter?

Thanks.

Hi Andrew, i am having the problem with my system and the file sapstart.log is:

SAP-R/3-Startup Program

Startup Profile: "D:\usr\sap\X11\SYS\profile\START_DVEBMGS00_SAP"

(3268) CreateProcess: D:\usr\sap\X11\DVEBMGS00\igs\bin\igswd.exe -dir=D:\usr\sap\X11\DVEBMGS00\igs -mode=all

Can you explain the way to solve this problem, i am going to be crazy with this.

Thanks in advance,

Thien Duong.

Thien,

Unfortunately my problem was initially resolved by rebuilding the SAP system ... which I'm sure is not viable for you.

After doing some testing, I worked out that my problem was being caused by adding the login/system_client parameter too low down in the DEFAULT profile. Once I put this parameter at the top, the system started up.

So, my problem didn't actually have anything to do with the support pack upgrade. 😕

Hope you get your system up and running again soon.

Andrew

Hi

I have finally found the cause of this problem. I is down to the START Profile getting corrupted when you edit it through transaction RZ10.

What happens is that the line that starts the IGS gets cut off. Below is what the corrupt line looks like looks like:

Start_Program_06 = local $(DIR_INSTANCE)\igs\bin\$(_IGS) -dir=$(DIR_INSTANCE)\igs -mode=all -sysnam

What this line should read is:

Start_Program_06=local $(DIR_INSTANCE)\igs\bin\$(_IGS) -dir=$(DIR_INSTANCE)\igs -mode=all -sysname=SID -sysno=00

Note the end of the line has been chopped off in the corrupt START profile. This causes SAP to stop soon after you try starting it up.

I still get this sort of corruption when importing the profiles into the database using RZ10, so I have a work around, but not a solution.

Rgds,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Can you give details of the work around ?

I am also facing the truncated line problem using RZ10.

Hi Andrew,

please also check your profile with:

sappfpar check pf=D:\usr\sap\CRM\SYS\profile\CRM_DVEBMGS00

Are there any errors reported?

Andrew

Do you have any other log information (startsap.log, etc.)?

Juergen,

The information in the SAPSTART.LOG file is contained in the SAPSTART.TRC file in my first posting. I will add it below though. What I have tried doing is to clear out the WORK directory and then start SAP up again. The only files written to when starting the system are

available.log

dev_disp

dev_ms

ESSTATS

INSTSTAT

kill.sap.cmd

sapstart.env

sapstart.log

sapstart.trc

stderr3

stderr4

stderr6

The only file with any relevant logging information are dev_disp, dev_ms, sapstart.log, sapstart.trc stderr3 and stderr4. I will include the files not displayed originally:

I'm still investigating the cluster log, but there doesn't seem to be much there.

Thanks and regards,

Hello Andrew,

soory but I also cannot find anything more. If I were you I'd open a message at SAP in parallel to get the problem analyzed.

Sorry again and Good Luck.

Regards

Juergen

P.S.: I hope you post the final cause and solution here...
