Hi All,
Currently I am using SAP business Objects 4.1 SP7 and we are going for an upgrade very soon. We have two options, either to go from 4.1 SP7 to 4.2 SP8 or from 4.1 SP7 to 4.3 SP1.
I understand we have new features and different user experience with 4.3 but would like to get some good reasons to present to the client on which is better , either 4.2 SP8 or 4.3 SP1.
Can someone please let me know which is the better version to upgrade to ?(4.2 SP8 or 4.3 SP1) or point me to documents where I can get a comparison on the above mentioned versions.
Thank you
Poojitha
Hi poojitha.sukumaran
Coming from BI 4.2 SP07 to BI 4.2 SP08 is something a regular update, with some new features and updated platform support. This update is regular Service Pack update in same maintenance level.
Whereas from BI 4.2 SP07 to BI 4.3 SP01, it minor version update, and this release bring lot of innovations along with new features and enhancements. Apart from what sharvari.kolhatkar, has mentioned, BI 4.3 release has brought lot of transformation to the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform, to know more about the the BI 4.3 maintenance level and the initial release in this line refer my blog https://blogs.sap.com/2020/06/30/sap-businessobjects-bi-4.3-whats-new/.
More important point, you need to consider, apart of innovations and improvements with respect to User Experience, Enterprise Readiness and Hybrid support, BI 4.3 release has made the BI Platform leaner and cleaner by deprecating certain products, features and functionalities, the same also can be found in my above mentioned blog, major deprecations include Explorer, Dashboards and Classic BI Launchpad.
Note: I believe, you are aware that, BI 4.3 SP01 is not yet released and planned to be released in Q4 2020.

Hi Poojitha,
Though moving from BI 4.2 SP07 to BI 4.3 SP01 is a minor release update, but as earlier, BI 4.3.x as well supports two different approaches for update scenario,
1. In-place update on any BI 4.x landscapes.
or
2. Promoting content using Promotion Management tools (from BI 4.1.x/4.2.x landscape to freshly built BI 4.3.x landscape.
Note: upgrading from lower minor versions using Upgrade Management Tool is not supported in BI 4.3.x, as Upgrade Management Tool (UMT) is deprecated and not included in BI 4.3 release because the End of Life for the lower minor versions i.e. XI 3.1 got over long back.
Refer the following diagram tagged with the following text "Upgrade Paths for upgrading content from previous versions prior to BI 4.x" in "SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.3 : What’s New".
So, It depends on how you are planning the move to BI 4.3 SP01, if you are planning to perform in-place update (that means, run the BI 4.3 SP1 installer to update the existing system, in your case landscape where the BI 4.2 SP7 is currently up and running) then no need of any manual promotion of content, otherwise, if you are planning to build your BI 4.3.x landscape on fresh machines as a fresh installation, then you need to perform the promotion of the content using any of the Promotion Management Tools, refer "Promotion Management" section in "Business Intelligence Platform Administrator Guide".
Regards, Venkat.
