Kanth,
Since you are from Java Background you can learn portal content development. You can easily learn and develop certain components and services with your java knowledge.
1. Wed Dynro for Java
2. Portal Component with JSPDynpages
3. Portal Service
4. KM Schedulers
With the above knowledge you can create/edit/customize/deploy existing/new portal components. Also there are simple APIs such as UME API, EPCF APIs, Navigation API etc. in portal.
Apart from that you can learn portal admin such as User Admin, Content Admin and System which doesn't need custing except some customization. With this knowledege you do almost all personalization, create PCD objects, User Management, portal display changes etc.
As suggested in earlier postsinstall NWDS on you mechine for portal content development in java and java based technologies.

Hi
Install Netweaver developer studio and start developing applications using web dynpro Java.
as you are from Java/JSP background, language should not be an issue, only you need to understand the
concept of webdynpro and all the concepts are well explained in the Help Documentation of Studio itself along with ample step by step tutorials.
I assume that you have acesss to SAP Backend and Enterprise Portal.
You can learn User Admin,System Admin,Content Admin,Content Management etc
whch does not require coding.
Please go through the book SAP NetWeaver Portal Technology: The Complete Reference.
Hope this gets you started.

Rajendra
