System copy means exactly what it says.... coping a system!, The difference between a system copy and a backup is that a system copy actually give you as a result a 2nd system (we're coping remember?)... while a backup is a copy of the DB files and logs in a point in time so it can be restore in the case that is needed. You can also do a system copy from a full backup... but thats another history.
