Start Routine in Transfer Rules

Hello Gentlemen

I am a beginner/intermediate level ABAP developer and I am wondering if there are any docs, web links, help etc., describing "START ROUTINE"s in BW and the general program model of those. I am hearing these routines come with several different keywords such as "RESULT", "ABORT", and other global definitions that can be leveraged for intermediate data processing tasks in ETL process. Would anyone please refer to a good place where I would be able to fetch the details of those. The help in SAP BW doesn't give a whole lot of info....

Also, if anyone can elaborate on Start Routines in Transfer Rules vs Start Routine in Update Rules that would help...

In http://service.sap.com/bw there is an How to document named "How ... to disaggreagte an upload.doc". There is an example of start routine usage.
