Do you recomend creating a seperate repository for SRM Catalog in MDM or is it good to have a seperate instance of MDM and maintain the SRM MDM catlog. I would like to know if we have to install two seperate MDM instances, one for SRM Catlog and the other for MDM(Products,Vendors..)

Hi,

in my project we faced the same situation and then went for seperate MDM server for SRM MDM Catalog and other Masters. We checked with SAP and got same recommendations from SAP too.

Some reasons for this recommendations are as below:

1. Version strategy of SRM MDM Catalog is different from Normal version strategy. And we noticed that new Patch of SRM-MDM Catalog comes quite later than Normal MDM patch.

2. SRM-MDM Catalog package does not contain all components of MDM and normal MDM does not contain all components of SRM MDM Calalog like UI application. So if you install single server then you may have to compromise on compatibility of different components and it may be challenging to find SRM-MDM Catalog components compatible with Normal Components. For example as of now normal MDM latest version is MDM 7.1 SP05 but MDM 7.1 SP05 is not yet supported by SRM-MDM Catalog.

3. If you face any problem in SRM-MDM Catalog and have to apply patch/SP, then it will impact your other processes too, even if they are working fine...

Hope this helps.

Shiv

Hi Raja

Separate instance of MDM server is recommended for SRM MDM catalog. To add to the reasons mentioned other than Shiv-

1. Separate instance gives us more flexibility in overall maintainability and is more scalable for future patch upgrades for MDM centric solutions like Vendor, Customer etc. and for SRM catalog.

2. Better performance from MDM server.

thanks-Ravi

Hi Raja,

Please also check SAP Note 1177779 - "SRM-MDM Catalog 3.0 - Installation & Configuration".

In this note, Section "1. Installation of MDM Components" mentions below under "Remark" :

"It is not recommended to run SRM-MDM Catalog and MDM Scenarios an the same machine."

Hope this helps.

Hi Raja.

I agree with Shiv and Ravi's comments on this question.

But recently there was a change in the delivery of the Catalog UI and MDM Components to customer. Now there wont be MDM versions(like MDM 7.1.XX.XX) mentioned in the release notes. Instead of that the latest MDM service pack details will be mentioned(like MDM 7.1 SP05 ). So if there is any new fix available for MDM 7.1 SP05, those components will be updated in the service market place, where customer can download it and can use if for SRM MDM Catalog.

You can find these details in the last patch released for SRM-MDM Catalog 3.0.
