Hi,

You didnt mention what size your your DB is , but another possibility to backup without an agent is to do a sql backup to file (dump) and then backup the file to tape.

I have a whole 3 tier system being backed up in this manner and the production server DB size is 180gb.(takes about 2 hours to backup to file)

This option is assuming you have disk space to hold the dump file.

Depends on when and how - not really a good idea to dump the contents of a DB on to the same disks as it's currently sat on. Raid 0 set would be best.

Recovery will be fun - two hours to get the dump from the tape to disk, then another 3 hours to read the file into the DB. Performance is not very good from your stats either. From the numbers its would mean you are moving about 25mb/sec - sounds like old 10k scsi disks.

If you increase the number of disks you will get a better through put - Double the disks, increase the I/O by 50%

Hi Kevin,

I have some queries and i believe, you can answer it.

I have the following system

OS/ Applications details

1) Windows 2003 enterprise edition 32 bit

2) MS SQL Server 2005

3) SAP ECC 6.0

Sever details

1) IBM x3650 dual Xeon server 5120@ 1.86 GHz,

2) RAID level I

3) RAM 8 GB

I want to go for Symantec database backup software. What information I have is, to take SAP system’s database backup through Symantec you need to have.

1) SQL Agent of Symantec

2) SAP Agent of Symantec

Given these information can you please help me out in putting the backup system in place.?

Thanks and Regards,

Rahul

No you only need the SQL agent - the SAP agent is for BRTOOLS on oracle and MaxDB.

see page 7/8 second item from the top.

What details do you want?

The agent is required to enable their backup software to do online backups using its own API. Without the agent you can only do file level backups.

SAP agent is for oracle and MaxDB only.
