Solution Manager Client Strategy

We have a project where we have two different opinions on the client strategy for SolMan (also BI and PI)

One group says that it is best to use the client 001 as the working client, another says that we should never use 001 cilents.

Following is the explanation for using client 001 as the working client:

This wasn't an issue in earlier versions of Solution Manager, and with version 4.0 and earlier (before all the new java applications) client 001 was just like client 001 in any other SAP system - and part of the standard installation process was to do a client copy to create your working client and go from there. However with Solman 7.0 and especially EHP1 and later, the system is now tightly integrated with the Java side of things for the work centers, solman diagnostics, etc, and all the Java<->ABAP connections and configuration tools are designed out-of-the-box to work out of client 001. SAP intends for 001 to be the working client and specifically recommends using it. Reconfiguring the system to use a different client deviates from the SAP standard, and only adds significant complications with no benefit to justify the complications.

Solman is not restricted to a single client like BI or PI, and it is not unusual for customers to use an additional client on their solman system for CUA, for example. But for the main solman functions I would strongly recommend sticking with 001. Trying to change it will unnecessarily complicate the initial deployment, and will likely cause issues with upgrades and maintenance further down the road as well.

Can you please provide comments on which way we should be approaching our cilent strategy for SolMan (and BI, PI).

Thanks.

As Paul says avoid delivered clients - its looks like 001 contains pre-delivered Support Desk content therefore copy this to your own working client

Normally you copy client 000 with the users form 001, but in the new installationguide for solman7.0EHP1 there is no section at all to copy a client, so I asume you me use the cleint 001 as your production client. It's much more easy.

Dear Diane,

Client 001 is a preconfigured client that should be copied prior to use.

Beside assuring you have a Master Copy, one of the reasons for using Client 001 is for use with Support Desk customizing as Support Desk is client dependant.

But typically Client 000 and in Solution Manager, also Client 001 are SAP delivered clients or reference clients, and should not be the working copy. They can be copied via the client copy. And the copied lcient would become the working client.

I hope this information is helpful.

Regards,

Paul

Hi Diane

This has always been a tricky one, actually I am still not that sure myself - from an application perspective normally a default client like 000 is copied completely to the working client and altered as required

As I see it if 001 is a delivered client (upon installation) then you would be altering a delivered client if you used it - however maybe client 000 contains the default 001 customizing too therefore maybe 001 is usable and if something goes wrong you can always still refer to client 000 - best to refer to the specific Solution Manager installation, configuration or scenarios for recommended use see ---> www.service.sap.com/solutionmanager for details

Best wishes

This is very very old information and NOT for solutionmanager 7.0 EHP1 systems! That's for SAP R/3 systems!

This is in note 550894:

5. Start transaction SCCL (local client copy) in the target client, enter client 000 as a source client and the SAP_CUST profile as a copy profile. (If the SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure is installed on this system or if you want to install it, use the copy profile SAP_UCUS.)

Always use client 000 as a template, and never client 001. (Older SAP Solution Manager releases prior to Release ST 4.0 constitute a known exception to this.)

Do not copy any application data from client 000 because the consistency of data and the number ranges cannot be guaranteed.

Only client 000 is populated with upgrades, Legal Change Packages, Support Packages, language imports and so on with new Customizing so that it always contains the current sample Customizing. This is why it is also so important that the copy is only carried out after the system is updated. Client 001, on the other hand, is obsolete. It serves only as a sample client and may be deleted at any time.

In addition, translations are only imported into client 000, which means that client 001 only contains German and English.

Hello,

If it serves as any indication, here at SAP some of our Solution Manager EHP1 systems run on client 00, and it works.

I am curious to hear what's the reasoning against using client 001.

I have seen that there are issues if you use different working clients for different scenarios in a single Solution Manager system. It could be said that you should work with only one working client in Solution Manager.

Best regards,

There are also notes that client 001 is NOT updated by supportpackages, but SAP is not clear for solutionmanager7 EHP1, in the new guides there is no section to copy a client!
