Are there any decisions under which licence SAPUI5 will be released?
Will it be an open source or a commercial licence?
Best regards
Helmut
Hello Helmut,
the current plan is that all SAP customers can use SAPUI5 with the licenses that they have already in place: means e.g. the NetWeaver developers license enables you to develop with SAPUI5, same if you have a dev license for SAP NW Cloud => So for SAP customers/partners, it is expected to be just an additional offering that is covered by the existing contracts. This includes the support according to standard contracts.
Outside of that clearly defined space, we're on our way to define the approach but it is hard to tell when we're able to communicate the results. Let's say an open source usage without support agreement is definitely something that is envisioned but for sure nothing that I already can promise.

Hi Stefan,
thank you for the answer. I would really appreciate an Open Source licence. Here are some background informations. I´m a freelancer SAP NW consultant. In the times I´m not working in SAP consulting projects I´m developing some little tools that I mostly use by myself. These tools are also interesting for other consultants. So I would like to offer them as SAAS apps on the internet if I find time for it.
It would be great if I could use SAPUI5 for developing these tools to extend my SAPUI5 experience and profit from this know how in my SAP consulting projects. For you, SAP, it would be great to have a wide propagation of SAPUI5 knowledge around the internet developers, would it?
Best regards
Helmut
This blog supports the idea of an Open Source licence
10 Reasons Why SAPUI5 Should Be On Github
Hello Jose,
not yet. We are continuously discussing and collecting relevant information for a decision step. In the meantime, many people inside SAP and also relevant decision makers like the idea and want to move into that direction.
This does not mean that I already can confirm this to happen, but it is definitely worth to keep asking - maybe not every week, but every month SAP of course is an agile company, but still a huge agile company...
Best regards
Stefan
Hi Stefan,
SAP is in fact a huge agil company.. and its a very cool one. Promised, i am not asking for open source. Is there a commercial license for SAP UI5. I have read, that its part of Netweaver license. I just need a small hint or link... something i can forward to my project leader. Maybe SAPUI5 is licensed within Netweaver Cloud...? You know it.. the executive guys.. they want me to give em information like price, a person and a phone number they can speak with.. we are currently not an SAP customer and/or partner. Maybe you can give the right person/webseite (what ever) to connect with and discuss this..
Thanks a lot Stefan! Merry chrismas and have a relaxed time with your family.
Best regards,
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
I´m of course not Stefan and he will give you a more detailed answer but as far as I understood SAP Netweaver Cloud comes with a SAPUI5 licence. Prices start at 2.000,- Euro/year and 15% of your income you make with your NW Cloud applications.
But I don´t know if you are allowed to use SAPUI5 in your applications that are not running on NW Cloud.
Regards
Helmut
Hello Thomas,
SAPUI5 is part of many SAP licenses, e.g. NetWeaver, NW Cloud, HANA and ERP.
However, as I understand your question, you'd like to use it e.g. based on Tomcat completely without any installed SAP server. So if cloud business is accepted from your side, NW Cloud indeed is a good solution to the problem.
In case you need SAPUI5 locally on your non-SAP-server, there is not yet an answer. I'll ask for a contact person and come back to you.
Thanks for the wishes, I'll follow your recommendation
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Stefan
Finally, we can say that UI5 is an open source under Apache 2 Licence:
I'm not sure but it looks that OpenUI5 is open source and it's equivalent to SAPUI5 but it's not exactly the same as SAPUI5 https://sapui5.hana.ondemand.com

Any news?
I am a freelance too, i wanna improve my experience with SAPUI5 but i am not into a customer project.
Can I use SAPUI5 to develop a standalone APP mobile for Apple Store or Google Play?

Hi Roberto,
it is hard to find the right words, but the answer is "still" not yet. We're pushing/fighting and have many supporters, but we're not yet through the process. The good news: we still intend to do it and are still in the process with progress. As of my best knowledge, we should have clarity in 2013.

Hi Stefan,
So I understand that there is questions about the open-source licensing... but is it possible to clarify which licenses does currently exist (regardless of whether open source or not). For example - if I deploy on the ABAP stack is it automatically licensed? How is the HTML5/javascript developer's licensed (e.g. local eclipse installations)? If possible - can you maybe supply links to the actual license text?
I am really excited about the technology and would like to start sharing some aspects as a SUG -- but the license issue makes things a bit murky.
Thanks!
Johan
Hello Johan,
when running on any SAP server, it shouldn't be a problem. For ABAP, please get the latest version of the NW UI ADD-ON from the SAP Software Download Center:
Support Packages and Patches -> filter for N -> chose UI ADD-ON FOR SAP NETWEAVER
The NW developer license covers covers all what you need for developing with SAPUI5 as well. As soon as SP6 is released, you'll get version 1.16.3 officially.
Best regards
Stefan
