Hi All,
We have a SAP Gateway licensing question we think martin.bachmannmartin.bachmann or andre.fischer might help!
The scenario is using SAP Gateway for Consumer Access (packages of 75,000 calls / year) for external portals that access SAP data through SAP Gateway, where we don't need SAP named users (anonymous access).
Just to confirm, is it ok to use this license type, regardless of whether the actual users are direct employees of the company, suppliers, customers or partners?
We understand that as long as there are no named users in Gateway/ECC system, SAP Gateway for Consumer Access is ok.
We are referring to a couple of typical cases, for example:
- An HCP Portal that reads online, anonymous data from SAP.
- Regularizing the situation of any external system making "indirect use" of SAP by calling funcions with a single, unlicensed communication user.
Thanks a lot,
Andres Nebel
Hi Andre, thank you for your response.
This still confuses me a little bit, i'm currently working on a portal for suppliers and in my scenario there are many, many suppliers (more than 10k) that needs to access the portal and read info about purchase orders. Do I need to buy for that scenario a "Platform User for Productivity Apps" license for every supplier that wants to access the data? That seems unreal because it would be an enormous amount of money. Or maybe if they are already paying HCP users for their suppliers they already have named users?
If not, what is the solution that SAP provides to a portal for suppliers? Otherwise I believe clients would create non-sap solution instead for that kind of scenarios.
Regards,
Andres Nebel

Hi Andre [andre.fischer], thanks for the great info.
Based on the new model described at Sapphire (http://news.sap.com/sappire-now-modern-pricing-modern-times/), we have two scenarios:
These are some of our main questions:

Hi Andres,
The topic of SAP licensing is complicated one. There is a comprehensive document available called “Licensing SAP® Software - A Guide for Buyers” that tries to shed some light onto this.
http://www.sap.com/documents/2015/05/849f654b-277c-0010-82c7-eda71af511fa.html
In general the SAP licensing is based on named user and package licenses. Both are required to license SAP software. In certain scenarios, exemptions from the Named User requirement may apply. This is for example the cases which have been covered by the SAP Gateway for Consumer Access license that you have mentioned. This license that covers the access to a SAP Business Suite System in Business to Customer scenarios. It has however been replaced by the SAP Mobile Platform consumer edition license which contains SAP Gateway for Consumer Access license but has a user based licensing model.
To come back to your question whether it is “ok to use this license type, regardless of whether the actual users are direct employees of the company, suppliers, customers or partners” I have to answer, no it is not ok except for those cases where the actual users are customers. If the users are direct employees, suppliers or partners named user licenses will be needed unless the access is not covered by any other SAP license.
In the above mentioned document “Licensing SAP® Software - A Guide for Buyers” on page 21 you find a statement about what SAP’s policy is on in direct access which is that “any access which may occur due to the customers’ software architecture must be licensed.”
Best Regards,
Andre
