SAP Fiori Analytical app and Business Objects

Former Member

Hello all,

I have never worked on Fiori before, however I have been time and again asked about why Business Objects and not Fiori can be SAP's traditional reporting offering  as it is mobile and has clean reports ? The suggestion is why create reports on BOBJ when a developer can write them on Fiori. Also cause maintaining the BOBJ servers, sizing , etc requires additional resources.

We have ECC on HANA.

Can someone please help me in getting that clarity as why Business Objects is and should be used as the core reporting tool and what role does Fiori have in it ?

And what Business Objects tool is Fiori comparable with ?

Some advantages on BOBJ that come to my mind are:

Can consume SAP HANA  Live views.

Allows slice n dice/ drill downs ( I assume Fiori can let you do the same).

Can be downloaded into Excel.

Can have different sub sets of the same report by a power user

Can apply variables/ filters/conditions.

Can have additional BOBJ CMC security applied in addition to the abap auth and HANA layers.

Business Objects can handle multiple users for the same report which may have heavy data. ( I dont know why Firori wouldnt be able to do that)

Please enlighten me

And let me know if this needs to be moved into Business Objects section then I can move it there.

Thank you.

Hi Zain,

Business objects is aligned with SAP Analytic strategy whereas Fiori is a modern SAP Frontend UI technology with new user experience (SAP UI5 as frontend and OData backend services on the backend). You can present/integrate various analytic views to Fiori Launchpad (for example, Lumira Visualizations, etc.). You adapt to these technologies based on your Business scenarios/needs. There is lot of information available on SCN.

Hi Kiran,

I do understand what Fiori is and the technology behind it. What I am trying to understand is what extent I would want to design my reporting solution here as compared to Business Objects ? What would those use cases be, what is it that can be done in Fiori and not in Business Objects and vice versa ?

Where is that line where the decision can be made if the report needs to be built in BO or Fiori ?

Thanks

Hi Zain,

If your client wants to run and view the reports in mobile or tablet

then you go with Fiori and oData

else

No need for Fiori apps and your client end-users will still use Desktop pc with BI software.

Hi Zain,

This is an excellent question. For now, i think the best answer is that it depends on the scenario/needs of the customer as Kiran mentioned.I found a post where someone integrated design studio with the fiori launchpad - it may be interesting to you. I also did some research and found a PDF from September 2014, detailing the Business Objects BI Strategy and RoadmapSAP Fiori analytical apps use HANA live views and as you mentioned above allow you to slice and dice your visualizations using the KPI modeler.

Unfortunately there is no black and white answer to your question (at least to my knowledge).

I hope this helps.

Sorry about that Michael.

Here is the list of reasons I gathered to come to a conclusion why BO should be used as the enterprise reporting tool:

Business Objects is aligned with SAP Analytics strategy. Fiori on the other hand is a HTML5 app which calls oData services to provide data to prepackaged reports (Fiori UI Tiles). Fiori is a user interface approach and not a  reporting solution. Just like complex SAP transactions will require to be done using SAP GUI and cannot be entirely done with Fiori transactional apps, enterprise reporting will require a more robust reporting solution like Business Objects.

Any custom UI5 app can be considered on case by case basis.

1) Business Objects offers multiple tools to address multiple requirements and is a more mature product.

2) Business Objects allows slice and dice of data.

3) BO WebI and Crystal allow automatic report publications or broadcasting.

4) Has additional layer of security via BO CMC to control access to folders/ reports.

5) Some Business Objects tools can be used offline.

6) SAP Business Objects provides self-service tools and most of the content is reusable.

7) Fiori would  require developer for the slightest change increasing IT involvement.

😎 In a SAP Business Objects semantic layer (Universe) multiple sources can come together to meet reporting requirement. Additional level of security can also be maintained here.

9) Business Objects servers are designed for resource intensive tasks/ documents  and sized to support multiple concurrent users .

10) Business Objects is compatible with a side-car scenario.

Hope it helps all.
