Dear Community,
We are currently working on a project in Saudi Arabia. Our people are renovating a local data center and they were made aware of a very old SAP ECC 6 system. It is a full rack with two SUN Spark M5000 server nodes and a SUN StorageTek 6140 from around 2005.
The system is no longer in use but still functional. The new owner wants to secure the data and has asked us whether the physical system can be moved to a local VM or a cloud platform? The entire rack is to be removed, therefore a safe and hopefully simple migration of the system would have to be planned.
Our DBA has taken a full database export dump and also a full RMAN backup from the underlying Oracle DB system, but we have no experience in migrating the ECC application stack. Kindly note, this platform is running on Solaris 10 on Spark, but we also have virtual machines for Solaris 10 on Intel available.
Ideally the migration would be from physical Solaris 10 on Spark to virtual Solaris 10 on Intel. There are no current users working with this system, but data retention in Saudi is now 10 years and up to 15 years in special cases, therefore the system must be preserved for this purpose only.
We have a strong Oracle DB team but need someone supporting us in the application stack migration.
Thank you.
Hello,
The SAP supported procedure to migrate systems is to perform what is called a "system copy" using the SAP tool called SWPM.
You can find the system copy guides at this link: https://support.sap.com/sltoolset

Hi!
You are welcome!
When you logon to the system using the SAP GUI, access the menu System -> Status. There you will have a "details" button (looks like a magnifying glass") that will open the SAP version information.
Also at the System -> Status window, look for the server (or instance) name field. It will be like "hostname_SID_number". The "SID" is the System ID.
And you should be able to find SAP partners and consulting companies that could help you perform the migration.
The SAP Note 1054121 might help you find one.
Regards,
Isaías
