Red X and no image

I know there have been many questions about this and it has been answered many times but I have not found a solution to our particular problem
yet.  The background…

We are busy implementing a web application that uses Crystal for reporting.  It works well except for the problem mentioned above.  As with all
the other posts about this problem, the actual PDF is fine (shows the logo image).  Background…  We run this new application under the URL of
another application on another server.  Let’s call this application1 so the URL is  The new application (let’s call it application2) is on another server and its URL is www.a  The image file gets created properly on the application2 server in the windows….. cr_tmp_image folder and it has the necessary permissions.  The problem seems to be that the path to the image is crystalreportviewers115/crystalimagehandler.aspx?dynamicimage=cr_tmp_image_XXX.png.  In other words the link is pointing to the
server where application1 runs from but that site does not use Crystal so no viewers are installed there.  The path
should probably be more like…….  I hope this makes sense – IIS is not my area
of expertise!

Any help would be appreciated.

The first place to start is to ensure you are in a supported environment;

You do not mention the exact version of CR (CR XI R2 is not quite enough), nor do you mention the version of .NET or the OS.

E.g.; please provide that info.

Next, given that you are in a supported environment, see these documents:

Dynamic images appear as red X on Crystal Reports in VS .NET web viewer

Viewer toolbar images appear as red ‘X on Crystal Reports VS .NET web viewer

And do not forget to use the search box in the top right corner. The search term 'crystal net viewer red x' will return a number of KBAs and more...

Final word; CR XI R2 is out of support - has been for 2+ years now. This means that there will be no fixes forthcoming, should any be needed.

Hi Pieter,

This sounds like it emulates a Proxy Server config. Try searching on this "crystal reports proxy server", top right corner and see if any of those KBA's help you.
