it depends:
a) it can be an A2A (application to application)
scenario when both R3 and SRM servers belong to the same company
b) if R3 connects with SRM server over the Internet
to some <b>other</b> company we should call it B2B
(business to business) integration

there are many scenarios regarding R\3 and SRM.
Many business process and data exchange can be configured between SRM and its componnents (SUS,EBP).
You can also conduct some scenarios using the ALE mechanism without the XI ,all depends on the SRM functionality needed to be implemented.
You can download the SRM content for XI, this content contains many out-of-the-box repository objects making the XI interface building easier.
