R/3 Enterprise - upgrade path?

hi folks,

we are planning to go from 46c to r/3 enterprise 470 with extensions set 200 - and under WAS 640.

as us was told the first version of 470 with 200 runs on was 630(you can read that in a lot of sheets of sap) and i read in this forum that was 630 is a java-only was, we got a bit irritated.

- is the first base-release for 470 with ext.set 200 was 620 or already was 640 ?

- when will 470 with was 640 be available?

- will 640 ever be available for r/3 enterprise?

- is it possible to start with 470 and ext.set 110 and was 620 and then switch only the was to 640?

thanks for any information

oliver

Hello Oliver,

R/3 4.7 will be based on SAP Web AS 6.20 only. MySAP ERP will be the first version which will be based on Web AS 6.40.

It will not be possible to upgrade the server of 4.7 from 6.20 to 6.40. Web AS 6.40 will however be able to communicate with 6.20 via standard mechanisms like calling BAPIs, RFCs or Java ressources.

Best regards

Ivo

hi ivo,

just 2 additional questions:

- is it true, that when running r/3 r.7 with Web AS 620 that we can install also a Web AS 630 (wich is only the java-server i guess) and with that environment we can use Netweaver JAVA IDE to develop webDynpro applications which call bapi's in our R/3 Enterprise 4.70 system.

- mySAP ERP - is this just a new name for r/3 enterprise and has the new Web AS 640 server ??

kind regards,

oliver

Hello Ivo,

I am rather sure that your statement "It will not be possible to upgrade the server of 4.7 from 6.20 to 6.40" is wrong here. I think you have just the JAVA stack in mind.

R/3 Enterprise 4.7 is based on 6.20 (pure ABAP) and I am sure there will be a upgrade path to mySAP ERP.

Kind regards

Martin

you both are right in different ways: There will be an upgrade path to mySAP ERP, but there will be no way to run R/3 Enterprise 4.7 on WebAS 6.40.

Or to make it more easy:

R/3 Enterprise runs on WebAS 6.20

mySAP ERP runs on WebAS 6.40

I'm not the most competent person for this question and this is not the best place to answer it as WebAS = Technology and we are separate to the application guys.

Strongly interpreted internal rules even forbid me to talk about it as I'm not handling this. However, you're the customer and I'll take the risk on this....

If you mean with ERP Core the ABAP Engine then yes, there are differences and the 6.40 ABAP Core will not be the same as 6.40. If you are talking about the ERP functionality between mySAP ERP and  R/3, I have no clue.

Please ask the application guys or read their places in sapnet. They are definitely not yet in SDN (despite the fact some colleagues might be able to answer the question).

Regards,

Benny
