Portal downtime error / Customization of portal error pages

Greetings,

I would like to know if anyone has ever had to customize J2EE engine error pages, such as "Service unavailable" and "Application is currently stopped".

We have a requirement of displaying custom error messages to customers, instead of technical confusing ones.

Maybe this could be done by redirecting to error page in case server instance is down?
