Migrate SAP BW on ORACLE DB to HANA

Hi Experts,

We want to migrate SAP BW 731 on ORACLE DB to HANA DB, we have below queries:

1. Can we use distribution Monitor for parallel export / Import?

2. If DISTMON is not supported then can we use migmon manually to have parallel export/ Import?

3. We want to use multiple app server for migration to reduce downtime , if none of the above is supported then do we have any other option to reduce the downtimes.

There is no upgrade involved in this scenario and hence we are using Classical Migration approach for the same.

Regards

Hi All,

Thank you for the input we have already taken the steps by using multiple app servers for export.

PS Roland: Thank you for your input, but for third case as we can use multiple app servers for export , that helps us reducing the downtime for export , because for HANA import we already have a powerful machine and import is really fast.

Also DISTMON documentation clearly mentions about limitation on HANA and also agree with you on MIGMON Manual run is also not supported.

Hi Naveen,

It is possible.

https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-46824

everything is possible, as long there is one SP in between, e.g. 7.31 SP14 on Oracle è 7.31 SP15 on HANA with DMO

Hello Naveen,

1. I'm not sure about DISTMON.

What size is your DB that makes you consider using DISTMON ?

2. We have used MIGMON to migrate our BW to HDB.

Just be careful and make sure you set the following in your properties file:

DDLORA_LRG.TPL

firstExportSAPNTAB=true

decluster=true

3. DMO Option

You *can* use DMO without having to upgrade (Roland Kramer from SAP did  a nice write up about this).

We tested this by creating a MOPZ transaction and only selecting one SP for the ST-PI addon. Worked a treat and we were able to migrate our BW with DMO.

Kindest Regards,

Amerjit

Hi Naveen,

You can find official website for BW migration using DMO.

https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-46824

1667731 - Rapid database migration of SAP BW to SAP HANA

A demo of their tool can be seen here:

Oracle to SAP HANA Database Migration Demo - YouTube

Couple of other links worth looking into:

http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/80e279fd-b067-3010-528b-f03a57a68...

http://scn.sap.com/community/netweaver-portal/blog/2012/11/26/how-we-migrated-an-existing-oracle-dat...

For schema migration, unless you already have DDL scripts that you can leevrage, SAP PowerDesigner be used.

See http://www.sap.com/pc/tech/database/software/model-driven-architecture/index.html

For data migration, esp when source system needs to continue to be up and running, SAP Replication Server, maybe a good choice.

See http://www.sap.com/pc/tech/database/software/sybase-data-replication-software/index.html

Please note that exact level of support provided by PowerDesigner and Replication Server for HANA will need to be verified. These products are best of breed and come from the Sybase acquisition. I believe they have been updated to support SAP HANA but exact level of support etc needs to be verified.

SAP also provides end-to-end migration services for such migrations. I'll find the contact point to further add to this thread.

Hi Srinivas,

Thank you for the response, but as I said in my query Using DMO is not applicable to our Scenario as we are not going to upgrade our BW release.
