May the forum login expire during a browser session?

Just a slight but surprising issue:

While being logged in and writing a comment, the "comment" action was rejected as if I were not logged in at all - in contrast to the information in the page's upper rigt corner:

  • May the forum login expire during a browser session

When I opened another tab for this forum in the same browser (FF 32.0.3, FWIW), it opened without an auto-login, so I had to login and re-enter my OpenID URL. Afterwards I could successfully finish my comment in the original tab.

Does it mean the login (i.e. the according cookie) can expire during a browser session? (If so, I have never noticed that before...)

When you login to the forum a cookie gets created (and a corresponding record gets recorded in the forum database). The expiry date on the cookie and record is 100 days. It would appear that you just got "unlucky" and your cookie expired while you were typing in your comment 😞

Thanks for the clarification. So that does mean the login can become "moot" during a session but the site will not necessarily show that in the "logged-in user state" (otherwise I would have expected to be displayed as a guest user)?

No problem, just temporary "bad luck", obviously:)

Yes, that is correct. The next time you refresh the page or click on a separate link, it will change the top to indicate that you're not logged in, but if the cookie expires while a page is loaded it will not update.
