Logon failure after upgrade Windows 2003 domain functional level and schema

Former Member

Before upgrade:

Windows 2003 Std server: Domain functional level 2000, Schema verion 30

Crystal Report XI R2: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon OK.

After Upgrade:

Windows 2003 Std + Windows 2008: Domain functional level 2003, Schema verion 44

Crystal Report XI R2: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon Error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException

Is it a Tomcat problem? OR Java runtime problem? OR XI R2 problem?

Anyone can help to fix it!? Thanks!!

You need Service Pack 6 for CR XI R2 to work on Windows 7. It's not been tested on Windows 2008.

What are you trying to log on to? CMC or the report database?

And are you doing this in InfoView or through a custom application or through Crystal Reports Designer or?

Thank you

Before AD upgrade:

AD/Domain Controller: Windows 2003 Std server: Domain functional level 2000, Schema verion 30

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

IE verion 6/7/8

Java: 1.6.0_17

Logon OK.

After AD Upgrade:

AD/Domain Controller: Windows 2003 Std + Windows 2008: Domain functional level 2003, Schema verion 44

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

IE verion 6/7/8

Java: 1.6.0_17 / 1.6.0_20

Logon report database on Win XP/Vista/7 by AD user name and Authentication by Windows AD

Logon Error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException

BUT

Logon CMC by "Administrator" and Authentication by "Enterprise" is OK.

Any logon Authentication by Enterprise is OK.

P.S.>

1. We clone the AD controller and CR XI R2 into testing environment and setup Win XP/Vista/7 for logon test: logon OK

2. Upgrade the AD controller: Domain functional level 2000 to Domain functional level 2003 (scheme keep unchange): logon error

(same logon error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException)

It seems CR XI R2 run on Windows 2003 (upgrade to Domain functional level 2003).

Any configure need change in CR XI R2 or Tomcat after upgrade Domain Functional level fromm 2000 to 2003?

Do you have any idea / suggestion on this issue? Thanks!

Hello,

Something like this, besides being on an unsupported platform, is to complex to do through forums.

Check with your IT guys or with Microsoft on the security changes they have done and if that's not an option and if you don't have a support contract you can purchase one here:

http://store.businessobjects.com/store/bobjamer/DisplayProductByTypePage&parentCategoryID=&categoryI...

and have a Support Engineer work with your to resolve.

Thank you

OK, I try again in the testing lab and simplify the combination. We only consider Windows 2003 ONLY.

Before AD upgrade:

AD/Domain Controller: Windows 2003 Std server: Domain functional level 2000, Schema verion 30

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon OK.

Upgrade cmbination 1

Step 1:

Upgrade Domain controller: Windows 2003 to Windows 2003 R2 (Domain functional level 2000, Schema verion 31 )

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon OK.

Step 2:

Upgrade Domain Functional Level: Windows 2003 R2 (Domain functional level 2003, Schema verion 31)

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon Fail

Logon Error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException

Upgrade combination 2

Direct upgrade Domain Functional Level: Windows 2003 (Domain functional level 2003, Schema verion 30)

Crystal Report XI R2: run on Windows 2003 memeber server

Operating OS: Windows XP/Vista/7: Authentication: Windows AD

Logon Fail

Logon Error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException

In this testing, we can conclude that the Domain Functional Level upgrade from 2000 to 2003. The MI logon will fail.

Q1. Crystal Report XI R2 cannot run on Windows 2003 server (Domain Functional Level: 2003)?

Q2. If Crystal Report XI R2 can run on Domain Functional Leve: 2003, how to fix our problem?

Do you have any idea to help us? Thanks!

Hello,

Sorry but it's not clear what you are doing. Is this an application you are using?

Is the app on the same PC as the Domain controller? If so it's not supported..

You may want to purchase a case and work with a support engineer. This may be too much for forums to handle.

Thank you

Hello Don

We clone the live servers (AD and CR XI R2) into testing lab and just upgrade windows 2003, Domain Functional Level from 2000 to 2003.

During logon InfoView, Authenticate by "Windows AD"

Logon Error: An error has occurred: java.lan.NullPointerException

Crystal Report XI R2 cannot run on Windows 2003 server (Domain Functional Level: 2003)?

Do you get this problem before?

Now I do, this has nothing to do with CR but with BOE

Moved to BOE forums to help you sort out the security issues.

Are you using NTLM or kerberos in the CMC? Can you login to client tools?

Cloning servers that are connected to AD has never been tested we don't do that on our VM's as AD is quite particular about service accounts and SID's. If client tools fail you may need to reset all your service accounts. 2008 will add other variables into the mix that can be overcome on R2 but are not oficcially supported.

Hi Don

1. We are using kerberos in the CMC, logon by administrator and authentencate by Enterprise. It's OK.

2. Cloning the AD and CR XI R2 server, the connection and logon are OK (before upgrade the Domain Functional Level: 2000 -> 2003)

- it means after cloning, no any setting change, we can logon InfoView by username and authenticate by Windows AD

- All funcation works normal

After upgrade the Domain Functional Level (2000 -> 2003), same logon method for InfoView in same condition is FAILED.

Do you have any idea to help us to solve in this situration?

Thanks!!

Test the client tools, if it fails remove and recreate all your service accounts, and if DES was being used because you got ahold of a legacy document then stop checking that on the account as well.

Dear Tim

We try "Start" -> "Business Objects" -> "Crystal Report Server" -> "Business View Manager"

Logon by

User Name: Domain UserName

Authentication: Windows AD

It's WORK!

In same PC, InfoView logon by

User Name: Domain UserName

Authentication: Windows AD

It's NOT WORK!

Do you have any suggestion(s) for our issue? Thanks!

If client tools work it indicates an error in your web/app configuration

You can following troubleshooting steps in KB 1476374 - **Best Practices** including Basic and Advanced AD Troubleshooting Steps for Manual Logon, NTLM, Kerberos and Vintela Single Sign On (requires logon to SMP to access)

also users have to be entered in username @DOMAIN.COM on java app servers.

Tim
