Visual Administrator isn't a portal role, so you can't assign it to yourself... The Visual Administrator is a client server tool which needs to be started as a desktop app.

You might also want to use the NetWeaver Administrator tool (http://portalserver:port/nwa) and navigate to System Management -> Monitoring -> Java System Raports -> User activities. Remember to select a server node - the default is a dispatcher node, which has no users!

can u explain more on how to start the visual administration and any configuration that has to be made to monitor for particular portal

VA is started by navigating to /usr/sap/SID/JCnn/j2ee/admin and running go, or x:\usr\sap\SID\JCnn\j2ee\admin and run go.bat. It monitors a specific server node, so if you have two instances (12 and 13) each of which has 2 server nodes, then you need to navigate to each of the 4 server nodes and run the performance tracing service and navigate to JARM and then user overview. Don't forget to use the refresh button, or you see nothing!

Well, to run VA you have to start by logging on to the operating system where the Java engine runs.. Then follow the steps I mentioned...

You should be able run the NetWeaver Administrator (which is a better way anyway) from any browser...

The port number is mandatory (unless it's running on port 80).

Check out the standard portal activity reports. It is rolled up every hour, so it won't be completely up to date, but it is certainly helpful...
