Hi Kelly - I'm just wondering - is this a new install or an update to an existing installation?
If you are trying to do a new install on an existing installation, that will cause you problems. You will want to do an update

Karol - It says "Environment variable java_home not defined"
I was able to procure another laptop, installed java and DS1.3 with no issue. Same java/DS I am trying to install. It also has java_home - Environment variable java_home not defined.
I added the JAVA_HOME env rebooted and this did not work.
I also tried adding Jre7Home as a variable (see log below).
Looking for some setup file to change so that this install knows I have java installed. Here is a blurb from the log:

I have had Java 32bit installed here for quite a while with no issue (C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.7.0_60) until now. I was thinking that I could find a way to make it work but DS was looking for it here (C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7) which in the default java install location. I guess where DS looks for Java can't be changed. So the long and short of it...I uninstalled and installed in the default location and DS now installs. Thanks Karol!
Kind regards,
Kelly
Hi Kelly,
the installer looks for registry keys that the Oracle installer creates. This behaviour sometimes creates trouble when multiple JDKs/JREs are installed on a computer.
BTW:
As of Design Studio Release 1.4 all this will vanish. Design Studio will not rely on the third-party VMs any more. Instead Design Studio will ship with its own JRE. It's the VM that has already been shipped for many years in SAP's server products. Version 1.4 will ship in week 48. So you don't have to wait much longer for this.
Regards
Martin
To know Java bit version, in command line type "java -version"
If a 64 bit version is running, you'll get a message like:
java version "1.6.0_18" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_18-b07) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode)
A 32 bit version will show something similar to:
java version "1.6.0_41" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_41-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.14-b01, mixed mode, sharing)
Or type "java -d64 -version"
If 32 bit is installed, you'll get error saying "This java instance does not support 64-bit JVM"
I have successfully installed DS 1.2 with Java 7 32-bit on my machine. Earlier neither Java 8 32-bit nor Java 7 64-bit were supporting.

Hi, I'm pretty sure you have Java for 64 bit installed on your computer and you need 32 bit version installed. I had the 64 bit version of Java 6 installed, (Java file: jre-6u45-windows-x64) on my machine and when I tried installing Design Studio I got the same error message. I then installed the 32 bit version of Java 6, (Java file: jre-6u45-windows-i586) and then Design Studio installed successfully. Maybe try that....

Hi,
I would suggest to switch in the next week(s) to Design Studio 1.4 32 Bit or better 64 Bit which contain a complete SAP JVM and thus should not have installation issues like these anymore.
The release schedule is in this note:

Hi All,
SapSetup does a little bit of scripting to determine certain registry keys. To find the script, start the installer and go to your %temp% directory. Then search for a new sub folder Sap<xxx>.tmp and go to the Setup folder inside. There is a file SapSetupVars.xml. In this file search for Jre6Home and Jre7Home.
It will show the code that is producing above trace files.
It looks for these kind of registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java
Runtime Environment\Java6FamilyVersion
Be aware that on a 64 Bit Windows the 32-bit Java version is searched in the virtual Wow6432Node folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java
Runtime Environment\Java6FamilyVersion
Now the code searches the Java Family Version:
Finally the corresponding JavaHome Entry is search for the family version:
Sometimes the registry entries seem to be corrupt. So far it helped to uninstalled the JRE and then install it again.
Good luck,
Christof

Hi Christof,
When installing DS 1.3 a message popped up that I needed JRE 6 or 7 and a download path (Oracle) was offered. I clicked on it and downloaded the newest version 8.
I still have the same problem as Kelly. I tried her solution, uninstalling and re-installing in a new path.
It didn't help.
The version command returns
No matter what I do, the following command always returned:
"set java_home" returns "Environment variable undefined"
I then tried downloading version 7. I installed it and it worked.
Does jre 8 not work with DS 1.3?
