Employee Self-Service - Is it OK to use/modify standard portal ESS role?

Hi,

I have a question regarding the usage of SAP standard portal role for ESS.

We will use ESS pretty much out-of-the-box; make only small GUI-changes as well as take away some of the functionality. Since all page and iView resources in the IMG config point to the standard portal role, I wonder if it is OK to use the standard portal ESS role in our business and make changes to it?

What is best practice? To copy the portal role one in our own namespace and then adapt all relevant backend configuration so that it references my new portal role or can we use the SAP standard one? What if we upgrade?

Thanks for your input!

Best regards,

Christine

Christine,

No, it is not advisable. SAP recommends to use a copy of standard SAP roles, in case you want to modify them.

Apart from what Koti has advised above, consider a scenario, where in you change your standard roles and at a later point in time, you intend to use the standard roles.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I read with interest what you said in this topic because I'm having the same concerns.

However I have a question link to it.

What's the best to do some customization? Copy the portal role in a Z portal role and modify there. Or copy also all the pages, worksets, iviews linked to it?

Thanks,

Thomas

If you customize standard roles, those changes will lost after upgrade. In my point of view,If you want to customize extensively,do modfications in another namespace but not sap standard roles.

If you use mostly sap standard roles with minimum customization or no customization, then use standard sap roles directly.
