Hi,

We want to install DSM to leverage BRFplus functionality in SAP ECC system. Please update on following queries.

  • Do we need to install DSM on SAP ECC system (ECC 6.0)?
    • Will there be any impact of installing DSM on existing ECC system?
    • or do we need a new system (with a separate system ID) to install DSM ?
  • In which environment of ECC systems, DSM should be installed (both in DEV and PROD or only in DEV)?
  • Which Version of DSM is to be installed in ECC system (for ECC 6.0)?

Br,

Madan

"Do we need to install DSM on SAP ECC system (ECC 6.0)?"

>>> You can but you do not have to. You can install DSM anywhere in your landscape. It can make perfectly sense to install it on a separate system or on top of a system that is not handled as strictly as ECC so that you find it easier to install corrections or a support package.

"Will there be any impact of installing DSM on existing ECC system?

Or do we need a new system (with a separate system ID) to install DSM ?"

>>> Sometimes administrators are very conservative with their ECC. Therefore it may be an option to install it elsewhere (see comment above). ECC does not need additional hardware (memory, ...) for DSM. For DSM the smallest system is good enough. 🙂

"In which environment of ECC systems, DSM should be installed (both in DEV and PROD or only in DEV)?"

>>> I recommend to keep Dev and Prod always in sync, means you have exactly the same software installed in the same version, same patches etc.

"Which Version of DSM is to be installed in ECC system (for ECC 6.0)?"

>>> You need NetWeaver 7.31 SP5, recommended is SP8, or higher. In case your ECC runs on an old version then it may be the better option to install DSM on another machine, build your rules there and deploy into the ECC system. ECC does not need any upgrades when it is a deployment target.

Hi Carsten,

Thank you for information. so for NW 7.31 SP07, do we need to install DSM 1.0 SP01 ?

Go for the SP that is highest. DSM 1 SP1 has a dependency probably to NW 7.31 SP7. DSM SP2 has a dependency to NW 7.31 SP10 or so. I do not know exactly. However, DSM SPs add a little bit of functionality sucha s the deployment workflow. This is optional. You will not need this to start.

Hi Madan,

the exact dependencies are listed in the DSM installation guide available in SAP marketplace. For Netweaver 7.31 the following prerequisites apply according to this document:

DSM ReleaseSAP Netweaver Release (minimum)
1.0 SP007.31 SP05
1.0 SP017.31 SP05
1.0 SP027.31 SP08
1.0 SP037.31 SP08

Concenring the Workflow Carsten mentioned: This one would also be available in DSM 1.0 SP01 when installing the following two notes:

1832797 – BRFplus: Deployment approval workflow preparation

1832759 – DSM: Workflow enablement for approval/deletion

Thank you Carsten and Christian,

If we have a separate DSM system, then do we need to have multiple languages in DSM system, if the managed systems are having multiple languages ?

Most likely you can live with one language in the DSM system.

The question has not been asked so far. But after thinking about it I could not find a technical reason for multiple languages in the DSM system.

Hi Madan,

Have a look at the below Blog post by Carsten:

This gives you a very good overview of DSM and explains 'Managed System', 'Deployment' etc.

Also, check SAP NetWeaver Decision Service Management 1.0 – SAP Help Portal Page -> Installation and Upgrade information.

Thanks,

Anindya
