DR Configuration on Window/Oracle

Dear All

I need some clarification for DR configuration.  I have production system installed on Window 2008 r2, oracle database 11.2.0.2 which MCS cluster as high availability option for ECC 6.0 EHP5. We have procured the same OS and database software at DR site also. Now I am planning to configure the DR system.

Please clarify the below doubts:

  1. At the DR site we are planning to copy the mirror image of production system (OS & Database) and change the system information
(like hostname, services details etc) as required.

Question: Is it right option ,  please suggest?

     2. For disk configuration at server and storage level we should consider the same as production or some other method.

Question:  Quorum disk for cluster etc, LUN level etc at storage level should be same as production ? please clarify

     3.  Are we should go for the installation of SAP software at DR system and the restore the database?  There may be changes in software

information at DR  system and informay may  not match with production system.

Question: Is it right option, please suggest?

Regards

At the DR site we are planning to copy the mirror image of production system (OS & Database) and change the system information

Your question lacks clarity. No offence.

If your requirement is to create a standby database at the DB site then take a back of the primary database and restore it to the standby node and enable log shipping.

Bear in mind that Cluster solution and DR set up are two different solutions.

Regarding the disk configuration, this is a question to the client or should be checked with a storage and/or OS specialist.

To question 3

What exactly you need at the DR site in addition to the standby database (which I suppose) ?

Are you planning to have additional App servers ?

Dear Reagan

Thanks for your reply...

You have understood correctly... I have to setup the physical standby database at the DR site. and then do the log shipment method  using oracle Dataguard.

I am more comfirt in taking the backup of primary system and restore the same at DR system and then do the configuration. Pl suggest if I am right.

Hi Vimal

As per your query above ,  you can take an Online Backup of the PROD database , ship the same to the remote DR location and restore it there.  Restore the DB at that location and enable the log shipping method.

This should serve the purpose of your DR from an Oracle DB side.

However you need to move the other SAP filesystem also to the DR location through OS copy methods.. this should include any interface file system etc.

Hi Rishi

Thanks for reply

As understand, if I will take complete image backup of OS and Database (Offline File system) and restore at the DR system then It should after some troubleshooting.

Pl confirm

Hello Reagan

Thanks

Let me make it more clear.

I will take full mirror image backup of (OS file system + Database file system) and restore the same at the DR system.  After restoration, the necessary changes will be done like hostname, /etc/hostfile and copy the standby control file on respecive location at DR. Later on configure the DG.

If you want add some line then please send the steps or if any document you have then please send it to vimal68@gmail.com

Once again thanks

Pl confirm

Hello Vimal

Your solution works well with the Unix systems.

I doubt whether this will work on Windows as there might be some references in the registry.

If the plan is to configure only a standby database database at the DR site then it is better to install the Oracle software.

Hi Reagan

Thanks for support.

Please clarify the below points:

1. If I will change registry correctly , then there should not be problem. I have done POC for quality system.

2. The domain name at the production site is "XXXX.com.np", please let us know what is the domain name at the DR should be. If I keep differen domain name then what would be the problem.

If you know how to get this working then there is no issue with that.

The standby database server and the primary database server should be able to communicate.

You configure both the listeners with their hostnames (not really required FQDN).

So as long as the primary can send the archived logs to the standby database server then there is no problem.

Hello,

I would suggest to install new DR system using backup restore method where restore production backup on DR system and put it in recovery mode in order to apply archive log files from production system. This way you can avoid manual process to change hostname etc. If you will use installation media of production system release then there will be no inconsistency.

It depends upon organization requirement whether you want to install DR as MSCS cluster or simple install. If you want to do simple install then now quorum disk etc. are required.

Thanks,

Sunny
