Hi,

Iam new to db2.In oracle if we change the archive set to ON,then we can take both online and offline backup and if we set archive to OFF then we cannot take online backup.

1)Is the same way in db2 also?once we change from circular logging to archival logging then archive is ON so can we take both online and offline backup?

2)offline backup is greyed out in dbacockpit.how to enable?

3)From dba cockpit if i take online backup, there is one option include log file. What is the log files ?is that the secondary log file ie archival folder.so every time if we take backup,it will take the whole archive folder everytime.

Pls guide me in this

Please see APAR IY91346

APAR URL link

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IY91346

As per APAR description LOGARCHMETH1 can't be configured online.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.Could you tell me in order for archive enabling after sap installation in windows? My understanding is

After the installation(in windows)

1.go to sidadm and stopsap from mmc

2.go to db2sid and change the parameter

3.take the offline backup to path

4.start sap from mmc

is this flow correct?

Hi,

yes thats correct. You can change the parameter for logarchmeth during the database is runningth change will be activated with the next restart. But after the restart database required an offline backup.

Hi,

1)Is the same way in db2 also?
once we change from circular logging to archival logging then archive is ON
so can we take both online and offline backup?

After fresh installation of SAP system with DB2, to enable the recoverability of DB2 Database, Log retention activation and specifying the Log Archive method (LOGARCHMETH1) are the part of Post installation Activities.

If you try to perform DB2 Online/Offline backup after fresh installation, it will not allowed and will tell you something related to Log archiving.

After enabling parameters related to LOG file management (either with circular logging or with archival logging), you can perform Offline/Online backup to deactivate "backup pending" mode of fresh database.

In log retention mode, the log files remain in the log directory (log_dir). No log archiving takes place.

If you specify archive location in LOGARCHMETH1 parameter, then Log files are archived to a disk/TSM location. You can archive them to tape using the DB2 tape manager (db2tapemgr) at a later point in time.

2)offline backup is greyed out in dbacockpit.how to enable?

Offline backup will NO LONGER be supported in releases after SAP NetWeaver 2004S. As of DB2 Version 8, execute an online backup using the INCLUDE LOGS option (in other words, including the logs files) instead of an offline backup.

3)From dba cockpit if i take online backup, there is one option include log file. What is the log files ?
is that the secondary log file ie archival folder.
so every time if we take backup,it will take the whole archive folder everytime.

As of DB2 Version 8, execute an online backup using the INCLUDE LOGS option (in other words, including the logs files) instead of an offline backup. When you specify this option, the backup utility will truncate the currently active log file and copy the necessary set of log extents into the backup image. Only those log files are included in the backup that are required to get a consistent database.

Hello,

1) If you change from circular logging to logarchmeth1 you have to restart the database and you must run one initial offline backup. After this you can do both, online and offline backups.

2) You cant enable this, the feature is no longer given

3) The logfiles are placed in /db2/<SID>/log_archive path this are the finished and closed logs which can be archived. If you start your online backup with option include log all logs written during the backup are written on the same tape/device or whatever. But only the logs written during the backup and they will no be deleted automatically
